Pre-ordered copies not arriving on time Before the shipment of Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger), Apple stated that users who pre-ordered the product in time would receive it on April 29th.

We've now received reports from a number of readers who indicate that shipment has been inexplicably pushed back to May 2nd.

MacFixIt reader Brian writes:

"It appears I will not be receiving my copy of Tiger today. Apple stated that delivery would be on the release date when I bought it at the Apple Store the first day it was available. The FedEx tracking shows it wasn't shipped until last night at 6:30 ET and will not arrive until May 2. This is a bit of a disappointment."

Benjamin Schollnick adds:

"I ordered Tiger the same day that it was available for pre-order... I will receive my copy on May 2nd.

"That is according to FedEx. I called Apple yesterday to confirm that I should receive it today, and was reassured that it would not be a issue."

Tiger-compatible version of DiskWarrior (3.0.3) announced Alsoft has announced DiskWarrior 3.0.3 which supports Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger). The new release also supports Tiger's new Access Control Lists (ACL) and extended file attributes. It has improved journaling support and enhanced RAID support, including the new concatenated RAID volumes.

The new release will be available in the first week of May, and will be a free update for current owners. Once released, customers should download the update from and use it to create and burn a new DiskWarrior CD containing the updated application. In order to create a new DiskWarrior CD, a user must have an administrator name and password, the original DiskWarrior 3.0.x CD, 650 MB of free disk space, and a blank CD-R disc.

Apple Remote Desktop 2.2 released for Tiger Our initial coverage of Tiger issues included mention of an issue with Apple Remote Desktop where the program refuses to launch under Mac OS X 10.4.

Apple has now released Remote Desktop 2.2, which packs Tiger compatibility:

MacFixIt reader Dave notes a minor quirk with installation of the new version that is easily resolved with a restart.

Dave writes:

"No indication of a required restart is provided yet once the update was installed I only saw a black screen when I attempted to control remote machines. A simple restart resolved the problem."

Font issues Several readers have reported issues with fonts and font management utilities after upgrading to Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger).

The most common issue is distortion of type displayed on screen, particularly in Safari and Mail.app. When the issue manifests, characters begin to overlap, and often cannot be seen clearly below a certain font size.

MacFixIt reader TJ reports an issue with Extensis Suitcase, as well as a possible solution.

TJ writes:

"I dad huge issues with Suitcase after installing Tiger. Issue: Adobe products would not recognize typefaces installed with suitcase. I did an 'upgrade' install. Would get multiple 'warnings' regarding 'font ID' conflicts. Fonts would show up in 'text reader' but not in Photoshop for example. Indesign would act very erratically.

"The solution was to search and delete all Suitcase files on your computer (especially those in your system 9 folder if you still have it). Reinstall Suitcase from scratch. Install your typefaces without using the 'check for corrupt fonts' option.

"Restart, then go to suitcase and check for corrupt fonts and enjoy Tiger, Suitcase and Adobe applications working in harmony again."

Support for Spotlight, Automator to be added to FileMaker Pro FileMaker Inc. today announced that FileMaker Pro 7 users will experience immediate compatibility with Apple's new Mac OS X Tiger. FileMaker also plans to support the Dashboard and Automator, two leading new features within the new operating system.

Hermstedt DSL adapter compatibility MacFixIt reader Robert Crooke reports a compatibility problem with Hermstedt device drivers under Mac OS X 10.4. Hermstedt manufactures ADSL Ethernet modems and network routers.

Robert writes:

"Please do not do what i did last night which was to upgrade to 10.4 and then find i have no internet connection. When i phoned Hermstedt in Germany today they informed me that new drivers are required but they do not know when they will be available."

I had the same concerns about late arrival...but at 10:30 am Fedex shows up
with my Tiger and I lifeboxes.... The only issue I have experienced is with Norton
Firewall and Privacy control....so out they went till they fix the problem (Norton).
Everything seems seamless so far....now my one question is how do I make my
screen look like water like in the demo on the apple site....The dashboard demo
    that is....

I ordered my copy of Tiger at 5:46am on April 12th. Up until 9:30pm last
night, Apple insisted I would be getting my copy on the 29th. Here is my
    routing from FedEx:
Apr 29, 2005 3:51 pm Left FedEx Sort Facility NEWARK NJ,
9:44 am Arrived at Sort Facility NEWARK NJ
Apr 28, 2005 11:39 pm Left FedEx Ramp MIDDLETOWN PA
9:38 pm Arrived at FedEx Ramp MIDDLETOWN PA
6:28 pm Left FedEx Origin Location MIDDLETOWN PA
5:36 pm Pickup status MIDDLETOWN PA
    Pre-routed meter pkg. picked up
I live in PHILADELPHIA. a hours drive from Middletown. What is my order
doing in Newark, NJ?. I usually get my Apple orders going directly from
Middletown, to Phila, to me. First Apple send on order "two day" service on
the 28th, when the promised delivery on the 29th. Then they insist I will
receive it despite the fact that FedEx says Monday , May 02, by 4:30, Apple
told me, several times yesterday, to ignore what Fed Ex and the Tracking site
said. At 4:45, Apple told me that they had "special information" that my
package was not in Newark, but in Philadelphia, that FedEx was working until
9:00pm and that I would have it! So I left a delivery authorization on my door
and went to the Tiger Party at the Apple Store: King of Prussia. ( I won a copy
of iWork !). When I got there, I told the store manger about my delivery
problems. She told me she would be happy to give a copy of Tiger is Apple
customer service authorized it. When she called, they insisted despite the
package would be delivered by 9:00pm, so no go!. For the same reason,
Apple refused to authorize a Saturday delivery, despite the fact that FedEx
said that all it would take was a phone call from Apple to authorize it ! ( By 9:
30 it was to late for that). At 9:30 pm the Apple rep very politely to me "We
failed You", "i am very sorry" : After Tiger arrives (on Monday), call customer
service and we will give you some free software from Apple to make it up to
you! They specifically won't authorize the King of Prussia Apple store to give
me a copy today, even though I'm will to drive up there. I guess its wait until
Monday and some free software for me! I wonder what they'll give me ? I all
have all of Apples more inexpensive software. Maybe Final Cut HD? Maybe
this will be better in the long run, but it sure sucks now!

My copy of Tiger is in West Springfield, VA scheduled to be delivered on
Monday May 2 despite Apple's reassurance of the contrary. Today April 30 I
called Apple Customer Care and was offered either a free copy of iWork or
iLife or a $30 rebate on a purchase from the Apple Store redeemable only
today. As other loyal Apple fans I have both of the offered software packages
(that I ordered the day they were announced). I don't need any of the cables
or other $30 trinkets that are offered in the Store. I don't see why I should be
forced to buy something more expensive just to redeem a "We screwed up"
rebate. I asked for a free upgrade to Quicktime 7 Pro since the Qt6 license
will no longer be valid in 10.4, but the rep told me the rebate only applies to
store items, not download items. He was very inflexible and hardnosed about
    it.

iWork and iLife may be a treat for many Apple customers, but not likely for
those that line up on April 29 to get the first copies of a new MacOS. This
is not a good way to keep Apple's most loyal fans happy.

I also pre-ordered my copy of Tiger on April 12th, with the promise in the
Apple store that it would be delivers on April 29th. I received notification on
the 29th via e-mail that it has been shipped. The order status in the Apple
Store says it actually shipped at 5:44pm on April 28th with FedEx 2day
service. Not sure how they expected to get it to me on the 29th. FedEx
tracking says it is in my area now, but I am guessing I will not see it until
Monday (and the FedEx site estimates a delivery date of May 2nd).

Sigh... guess I should have not been so loyal a customer and just gone to my
local Apple Store yesterday instead of pre-ording.

Mine arrived 1 day early, on April 28, so by now I am an old hand at 10.4.

Well, first I reported last week that I received Tiger too early, and that PCMall called and asked me to return it. Well, I finally felt pity on the poor customer service rep, plus combined with the free copy of iLife they promised me, so I boxed my Tiger back up and sent it back.

Today I received TWO copies of Tiger by FedEx from PCMall.

Man are they having some issues!

I can't comment on the shipping issues of Tiger, but I can comment on the
PC/Mac Mall. On one order, I got the wrong item and also got an item that
was not as advertised in regards to the compatibility of the product. I tried
contacting customer service via email multile times about the issues and
never heard back. I will never order products from them again since they are
neither reliable nor are they trustworthy.

My Tiger arrived (Friday morning) I paid heed to all the usual caveats before
installing but have met with a large number of bugs.

Critically; if you have a file on your desktop with two file types on the end of
    it (I downloaded a .jpg file to my desktop fom within Safari;
something.jpg.html ) when I went to the desktop the file had .jpg.html at the
end, so I deleted the .html part and my entire desktop froze. I had to force-
quit finder. Some 2 mins later my entire sysytem froze and I was left to turn
off the power and restart the Dual G4 Power mac.

Sherlock launches in Norwegian or Swedish despite my Language set-up
    being British.

Load os other little bugs everywhere. My install was quite clean with all
    permissions checked pre/post.

I ordered either on the day of the announcement or just shortly after. I received my copy of OS X 10.4 on 4/28/2004 around lunch time.

I decided to do a clean install since I've had my Powerbook G4 since 2003. I'm installing new software now and have noted a few problems. The most obvious one is the Virex is not compatible with 10.4 per Apple. So I'm left without a Virus scanner. How ironic. Not that I'm overly worried, but I bet even Bill Gates would find that funny.

I have to say that my copy arrived on the afternoon of the 29th as promised. All
you need to do is check with FedX and their tracking number. No complaints
here. Complaints of incapatability with some software, including
NortonSymantics however. Used DiskWarrior, vs for OS X 10.3 and no problems.
It found 181,500 or so files messed up and a number of directories and tree.

Message from Apple to say that I would receive my copy on 3rd, May. I am not holding my breathe though! So much for promises. Apple let us down yet again.

    Will you listen to yourselves?

So, Apple haven't been able to get 100% of copies of Tiger to the people who
pre-ordered them by the release date. There are thousands of copies going
out to individuals and to stores, and they are being carried by companies that
are neither owned nor controlled by Apple. What do you expect them to do:
employ an army of people to deliver each copy by hand?

Millions of people in the 3rd world have to live without clean water or
adequate supplies of food, and people posting to this site are behaving as if
the world's going to hell in a handbasket just because their parcels are a
couple of days late! Is it any wonder that ordinary people treat us Mac
enthusiasts as if we are mad?

Please learn some patience and try to get things into perspective.

I ordered my copy of tiger on April 12th, and I will not receive it until
tomorrow, May 2nd. I am not going to preorder anything from them again. I
was planning to spend my weekend upgrading and optimizing, but not those
plans are ruined. I should have just walked into the store and bought a copy.

However, comments like "Apple let us down yet again." are ridiculous. That
kind of melodrama is pointless and baseless. Get over yourself.

One of the readers on the Mac User Talk (www.macusertalk.com) forum reported
that when he called the Apple Store Online to complain about Tiger's delayed
shipment, they offered him the choice between free iLife, free iWork, or $30 off
any iPod accessory purchase to make amends.
