iTunes 4.8 (#2): Repeated error messages; Not available in Software Update

Repeated error messages Several readers have reported receiving a persistent error message when attempting to play music after updating to iTunes 4.8.

One reader writes:

"Since installing iTunes 4.8 I have been been receiving a message telling me that iTunes cannot play the movie 'Orig_011253ad.IETemp' as it can't find the movie data file for the same movie. I did not ask iTunes to play any movie. I do not have a file by that name on my computer, yet iTunes keeps looking for it. I have trashed preferences and reinstalled iTunes 4.8, nothing had changed. I have since viewed a few trailers hoping doing so might stop the message from appearing; it has not."

If you are experiencing similar issues, please let us know.

Not available in Software Update As noted by a number of users, iTunes 4.8 is one of the few releases in recent memory that does not appear in Software Update. Instead, the update must be obtained through the standalone Web download link.

I have previously reported the "Searching for movie" bug in iTunes 4.8.
I have since reinstalled 4.7.1 and everything is fine.
After reading the latest knowledge-base articles about videos in iTunes, I
suspect that the problem lies in clicking yes when iTunes 4.8 asks you to make
it the "Default" application (presumably also for movies).
That is probably why some people don't have the persistent error messages (and
    crashes) and others do.
Can someone who has 4.8 installed confirm this?

I tracked down the bug to the fact that Keynote has converted several mp3 files
in my iTunes Library into .mov (Quicktime) files but for some reason iTunes
searches for them with an mp3 extension and that it needs to open them as
movies, rather than as sound files and keeps bothering me with these error
    messages.
I moved the .mov files out of my iTunes library and the searches went away.
    Apple should fix this!

when installing 4.8 (note: software update did not pick it up) iTunes was
updated (specifically stated in instal dialogue), and I was not asked re default.
Update proceeded flawlessly and I have used 4.8 without problems. A different
experience from yours but I wonder if the trick might lie in the 'update' versus
'instal'? (Unless of course you "updated" too...)

I downloaded and installed iTunes off of Apple's Web site on my iBook.
It installed fine, and is not getting the error messages.

I did a software update on my G4 tower today, and installed iTunes that way. I
am getting the movie error on that one.

    Both computers are running Tiger.
I don't remember iTunes asking to make it the default application for movie
    playback either time...

I'm getting the movie error...does anyone know how to go back to
4.7? I have the installer but I can't get it to install, even when I
    delete 4.8.

Any help greatly appreciated, this is the last time I will download
    an itunes update!

I have the same problem with the movie error message. How did
you go back to 4.7.1? I can't get it to install even when I deleted
    4.8.

    Any help greatly appreciated!

I ran iTunes for Windows yesterday, and was told that "an update was available (4.7.1)". But going to the web site shows v4.8. Doesn't seem like they've got this all quite down yet.

I've been trying for 24 hours to download. It doesn't work for me!

I figure if it's not available in Software Update, there must be a reason for that... i.e., something's not quite ready for primetime. So to everyone who's having problems with the v4.8 standalone, why did you install it? Was something lacking in 4.7.1? That's not just a rhetorical question -- I mean, are there problems with 4.7.1?

No problems in 4.7.1. Installed just to see what's new (movies), and got all
    those crashes and error messages.

I didn't think iTunes was broke enough to have to actually do something to
update it to synch what???? address books???????????

Oddly I was able to download the new iTunes but Software Update does not
show the new DVD Player. I have noticed that I often find Recovered Files lurking
in the Trash of Users. In my trash I have found Software Update related files.
