iPhoto 5.0.x: Unwanted image changes; Freezes on launch, fix
Unwanted changes in images when saving images in Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) MacFixIt reader Joachim Hartmann has alerted us to an iPhoto 5.0.2 issue that began appearing for a number of users after upgrading to Mac OS X 10.4.
The issue occurs after a user makes changes to a photo (cropping, red-eye reduction, etc.) then attempts to save the image, switching from edit mode back to view mode, unwanted changes -- where an image appears sightly brighter, washed out, or acquires a red hue -- are made.
One poster to Apple's Discussion Boards describes his case of this problem:
"I noticed this too, you can try it my making a change, i.e. click on either of the adjustment icons on either side of their respective sliders, then click the opposite on to adjust back. In actuality no change has been made but iPhoto will think so and generate the edited file.
"As it does so it will do as others have said, a change in color, contrast, etc. Almost as if the "enhance" button was pressed but less drastic of a change."
Freezes on launch, fix Several readers have reported a repeatable issue where iPhoto freezes on launch under Mac OS X 10.4. MacFixIt reader Zach Benz reports that updating to the latest version of Keyword Assistant -- a plugin for iPhoto to make keyword management easier -- resolves this issue in many cases:Zach writes:
"I found the cause of iPhoto hanging - Keyword Assistant. This helpful utility is installed _inside_ the iPhoto application bundle, which explains why none of my attempts to fix iPhoto worked. None of these attempts actually replaced the existing iPhoto application, including the reinstall (since it simply upgraded iPhoto in place). The fix is to either remove Keyword Assistant, or install the latest version which works around a Tiger bug which causes the hang, either of which can be accomplished by downloading the latest version and running the installer."
