Mac OS X 10.4: Printer problems: Deleting, then re-adding

by CNET staff

A number of readers report issues with Epson printers that, in some cases, can be resolved by simply re-adding the devices using the Apple Printer Setup Utility (located in Applications/Utilities):

Gerry Cox writes:

"I have done the upgrade to Mac OS X 10.4 'Tiger' without to many problems. I found that in Printer Setup Utility that my two Epson printers were no longer there (An Epson Photo 870 and an Epson Photo R300) Oddly enough my CUPS version of the 870 was still there. I tried to reinstall both printers which appeared to work but only installed the 'standard' version of the R300 (not the borderless printing version). I found that if I selected 'More Printers' when I selected 'Add' in the printer list I could select 'All', 'Standard' or 'Sheet Feeder - Borderless' as I was expecting. Hope this may help someone else. My main problem is that the 'Utility' function does not work with either of the Epson Printers (Utility version 2.14). It shows the version splash screen then crashes. I thought perhaps I had remnant files from OS X 10.3 so I used the Printer setup Utility to remove all printers by selecting "Reset Printing System" from the menu. I then reinstalled all the printers but still the Utility application crashes. I have sent a crash report to Apple. I will also send an email to Epson."

Meanwhile, Brett Wickens received a terse response from Epson technical support regarding Tiger compatibility:

"Thank you for contacting the Epson Connection. There are no drivers available for this OS at this time."

Wickens adds:

"There are beta Gimp Print drivers for the 2200 included in the Tiger install, but they do not (elegantly) cover the feature set of this printer. I also reinstalled the latest Epson drivers (an arduous process) and while the printer and features do appear, I have had spotty performance with them. Epson has never properly supported this printer (and many others) under Mac OS X. It's surprising the the online Apple Store continues to promote their products so vigorously, especially in the shadow of the massive Tiger launch."

Once again, MacFixIt fail to mention Printer Setup Repair as a possible
solution to printing problems. There is now a Tiger compatible version
available. I use it whenever I have trouble and 98% of the time it sorts
everything out. After performing an upgrade to Tiger, I has trouble printing
and ran PSR. It immediately told me that my config files were out of date. I
guess they were not upgraded. PSR was able to replace the files and that got
me printing again. If you need it, do a search on VersionTracker.com.

    Just my 2 cents.

I wonder - I bought my Epson Stylus Color 740 from an Apple reseller years
ago - when I successfully used it with my then-ancient Apple LC III -{68040 /
    25 Mhz}-running OS 7.5.3.
    Upgraded to a G3 iMac DV {400 Mhz} with OS 9.04 (thru 9.2.2) without
    trouble.
THEN got a G4 eMac 1Ghz with 10.2.6 to 10.2.8 and had to update drivers
but had no trouble printing with the Epson 740 after that.

Now I'm using OS 10.3.6 on the same eMac - STILL NO
TROUBLE PRINTING with my aging Epson 740 printer!

Conclusions: (1) NEVER adopt a major OS update "immediately" - wait for it to
be refined and matured and allow third party product producers to "catch up."
    (2) If one does rush to adopt a major OS update - try pointing the Finger of
Blame into the mirror when things go haywire.

After installing 10.4, my Epson SC 740 functioned normally, but the Epson Printer Utility would consinstenly crash. This morning, I upgraded to to 10.4.1 and now my Epson SC 740 will no longer print using the Epson printer driver. I can only print with the Gimp beta driver. Deleting, re-adding, repairing all prove useless in fixing this problem.

I too had a problem with my Epson RX510 (known as an RX510 in the States) Intially after install 10.4, it wouldn't see the Epson driver, only the gimp printers. I rang the New Zealand support office and the person I spoke to was most helpful. They had been advised that the current driver was okay with 10.4. He suggested I reinstall etc. I did and after a restart, everything popped into place. I have just tried printing to the Epson again, after installing 10.4.1 and it is still fine.

My Xerox Phaser 3400 is seen by System Profiler but not by the Printer Setup
Utility. I have reset the printing system, zapped pram, run printer repair utility,
    etc to no avail.

Since upgrading to Tiger I have been unable to set up a Canon i9100 (connected via USB) in Printer Setup Utility. The printer can be selected Ok in the list - the problem is that no valid driver is available in the Canon driver list. All that the list contains are Gimp-Print drivers, none of which are appropriate. I have tried reinstalling the Canon drivers for this model (v2.3.2) but they still do not show in the list. I have also tried resetting the printer system using Printer Setup Repair, but still no joy at all.

Secondly I have a repeating problem with a Brother MFC-9880, again connected via USB. What seems to happen here is that every time the system is rebooted a second copy of the printer is created. There are never more than two copies, but whenever I delete a copy, a second printer gets subsequently created when I reboot.

Today I experienced a printing problem, and the only solution was to reboot. I
was trying to print a document from Word, it hung the application. My default
printer is an Apple LaserWriter 4/600 connected via Ethernet using a Farallon
adapter. I even tried to go to Printer Setup Utility to see if I could resolve it there
and that program too hung. So I Force Quit it and rebooted and was able to
print again. I'm not sure if this is related to others' printing issues but thought I
would post here in case there is a connection.
