Mac OS X 10.4: Bonjour issue and fix

by CNET staff

Many of the issues users are experiencing with Bonjour (formerly Rendezvous) network printing under Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) can be resolved by simply deleting, then re-adding problematic printers in the "Print and Fax" pane of System Preferences.

Sseveral notes confirm this workaround.

MacFixIt reader Andy Watts, for instance, writes:

"Just a quick email to say that I also upgraded from Mac OS X 10.3.9 to 10.4 and have a printer connected to an Airport Express - I also had the same problems, and removing the printer and adding it again fixed it."

Been there, done that. Still can't get my LaserJet 6P connected to a DLink print server to respond. When I try to print to it, it looks like the job is going and then it just says "Jobs stopped". Clicking start doesn't help -- it whirls aways for a few seconds then stops again.

Almost the same here: HP LaserJet 1100 connected via D-Link ethernet
printerserver worked flawlessly under Panther with help of CUPS. After upgrade I
just get the message: "Network host '192.168.1.30' is busy; will retry in 30
    seconds".
Measures like completely reinstall and resetting of cups and gimp-print did not
have any effect on this behaviour!
The printerserver it self still works okay with the Windows and Linux terminals in
    the network. Any suggestions??

The deleting of the printer in Print and Fax did not work for me. Doing a soft
reset of my AirPort fixed the problem. Printing is working fine now for both
    Tiger and O/S 10.3.9.

My Epson Stylus C88 printer that connects just fine to my Powerbook via its USB
port, will not when plugged into my Airport Express USB port. The Printer Setup
Utility shows the printer as Bonjour, but the print driver does not show up in the
    driver list.

I thouht that this means that all print drivers must be Bonjour-enabled before
they will work on Airport Express; but that can't be true since all the old drives
    shown in the list?

I tried this on a Mac Mini (duo-core OS X 10.4.7) at a friend's house that is networked by a Motorola Cable modem and netgear switch to a Lexmark D9350 MFP. This printer was working fine until the cable company dumped the URL that the Motorola had and then the network did not network. I tried the deletion/re-add of the D9350 several times (after I set the static IP on the printer to match the topograghy of the LAN dictated by the Motorola). Nothing worked. I am stumped on this one.

The lexmark scanner set-up re-added the scanner but that also fails to communicate in actual program usage.
