Mac OS X 10.4: Safari 2.0: Problematic plug-ins, more

by CNET staff

Eliminating problematic plug-ins Plug-ins incompatible with Safari 2.0 can cause the application to repeatedly crash. Most of these add-ons are located in the folders:

  • ~/Library/Safari or
  • ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins

Try removing any user-installed items from these folders, and check for persisting unexpected quits in Safari.

Some plug-ins, like iGetter, were initially problematic under Mac OS X 10.4 but have now been updated for compatibility.

Copy/Paste issues MacFixIt reader Scott Rose reports a deficiency in the copy/paste mechanism in Safari 2.0, as well as a workaround:

"In Panther, you could control-click on an image in Safari, 'copy image to clipboard', and then paste that image into an HTML message in Entourage.

"In Tiger, you can still control-click on an image in Safari and 'copy image to clipboard,' but when you try to paste that image into an HTML message in Entourage, you only get the LINK to the image instead.

"A workaround: Create a new Preview document first, and copy the image AGAIN (from Preview), and THEN paste the image into Entourage. Several extra steps, but at least it works until Apple and/or Microsoft can fix this problem."

MacFixIt reader Stan Woo-Sam reports that copying images in Safari 2.0, then using the "Paste Special" command available in some applications allows proper pasting.

Stan writes:

"Paste special in Word and Excel both will paste the image as expected. Pasting into other OS X apps seems to work fine so it seems to be something special about Entourage and Powerpoint and the new webkit."

Problems logging into secure sites, older version works Several readers have reported issues logging into banking and other secure Web sites with Safari 2.0 (included with Mac OS X 10.4).

One reader writes:

"After doing a clean install of Tiger, the Safari version installed with Tiger does not let me login to my Bank. My bank is TD Canada Trust, one of the largest (the largest?) banks in Canada. Safari loads the log-in page, accepts the log-in info, but does not load the next page."

MacFixIt reader James reports that using a previous version of Safari (e.g. 1.2.4) from an older installation of Mac OS X can provide access where 2.0 cannot:

James writes:

"I made a copy of Mac OS X OS X 10.3 to another HD before installing Tiger. I made an alias of Safari 1.2.4 on this HD, and moved the alias into the root folder of the Tiger HD. I renamed the Safari alias to 'Safari 124' and dragged it to the dock next to the Tiger Safari icon. Safari 1.2.4 works where Safari 2.0 does not."

Some banking Web sites confirm incompatibility Several banks are now confirming incompatibility with Safari 2.0.

One reader received a note from Citibank's customer support department stating:

"Thank you for your message regarding accessing MyCiti with the latest versions of Safari and the Macintosh operating systems (2.0 and 10.4 respectively).

"We have been able to duplicate the problem on our systems. We have reported the problem to our system developers. We currently do not have an estimated time to resolution and regret any inconvenience you may have encountered. Please use an alternate browser (e.g. Internet Explorer 5.2, Netscape 7.2, Mozilla Firefox) in the interim.

"Sincerely, Citibank Online Customer Service

Safari2 has begun closing down completely when closing a tab ?

some times it closes down just clicking on something in the open Tab but
mostely closing a TAB jsut shuts the whole browser down.
Tried deleting preference, reset Safari but still doing it in increasing instances.

Safari 2 still doesn't work with any of the forums that use Rich Text.

For instance, go to any phpBB forum. Type a few sentences. Go back, highlight a
word or phrase, and then hit the Bold button in the forum's toolbar. It will place
the tags down at the bottom of the text. Now do this in Firefox (or any other
browser I've tested). It will place both the opening and closing tags on either
side of the highlighted text, as it is supposed to do.

Safari 2 still doesn't work with BillPay either. Firefox works fine.

Now I get errors in Safari 2.0, with strange login requests for most images displayed on the page
    Any one got any ideas?
