Mac OS X 10.4: AirPort: No auto-reconnect after sleep; Connections dropping when switching from one base station to another

by CNET staff

No auto-reconnect after sleep, solutioins Deleting, then re-establishing keychain sets can resolve a number of networking issues in Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger).

MacFixIt reader Tom Morris reports that deleting the AirPort keychain entry can resolve previously reported issues where Mac OS X 10.4 will not automatically re-connect to AirPort networks after waking from sleep.

Tom writes:

"After installing Tiger I experienced the same reconnect issue in AirPort where it won't reconnect after waking from sleep. The fix for me was to delete the airport keychain entry in the keychain application. After that all is back to normal."

Meanwhile, David Hawley reports that in his case, simply re-entering the AirPort network password solves the issue.

David writes:

"I had this problem. After installing Tiger it would not automatically connect to the airport network on startup or after sleep. I went to System Preferences>Network>Airport>Configure and re-entered the password. It works fine now."

Users experiencing this problem with an AirPort Base station may also want to try resetting the unit as described in the following Knowledge Base articles:

Connections dropping when switching from one base station to another Several readers have noted that, under Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger), the wireless AirPort connection drops when a system is moved from the range of one access point into the range of another access point -- even if the second access point is set up to be a wireless repeater, or vice versa.

Apple acknowledges this issue in Knowledge Base document #301322, and says users in this situation should renew their IP address to restore access via on of the following methods:

  • Put the Mac to sleep then wake it back up
  • In the "Network" pane of System Preferences, choose AirPort from the "Show" menu, click the TCP/IP tab, then click the Renew DHCP Lease button.

Well, I've got a recent 1.5GHz PBook 15" that is experiencing this problem, and
nothing seems to fix it. Even after installing the 10.4.1 update, I still find that
the machine won't reconnect to the network automatically when it wakes from
sleep. I can manually connect just fine, but it's still annoying... I have no
passwords on my network, so the fixes recommended here don't offer me an
    option.

    <sigh>

    It's always something eh?

    Hi List mates-

I just spoke to Apple support about this issue. Apparently it is still a known bug
not fixed yet, but assured they are working on it. I did find a fix that seems to be
working which was to establish a "NEW" location, setting the Join by default
option to Preferred Network, removing the exisiting list and re-joining manually
via the airport icon in the menu. THis seems to have worked and I am rejoined
to the network after waking from sleep.

Hope this fix works for others... Marc

I've had this problem on two machines and the fix has been to remove and then add a location in the network setting under system preferences.
I have removed all (but the last which appears, one must remain) and then created a new location. My computers now reconnect after sleep or restart.

I've also found that if you just retype the network name or password in the
network prefs and hit "Apply Now" this fixes it.

One user at Apple Discussions forum, reported that changing the channel of the base station solved this issue...

WHY IN THE FREEKING EFF SHOULD ANYONE HAVE TO DO THAT?

AND IT'S NOT JUST AIRPORT -- OS X HAS A KNOWN STALL/DROPPED CONNECTION/NETWORK STALL-DROP-FREEZE PROBLEM THAT APPLE HAS NEVER FIXED AND IT STILL EXISTS TO THIS DAY IN SEPTEMBER 2007.

CHECK ALL THE BOARDS AT DISCUSSIONS, HERE, ALL THE MAJOR APPLE BOARDS ONLINE -- they are called different things (including lookupd bug) but most of the workarounds are temporary and still don't solve the fricking problem.

APPLE SUCKS A BIG ONE ALOT OF THE TIME ( it's just that microsoft the abominable sucks more)

I'm on a 1.67Ghz PowerBook, a brand new Airport Extreme and Express for AirTunes. Not only am I having this network re-joining problem - trying all above solutions and an archive and install to no avail - but my AirTunes is now dropping out as well. The latter actually bothers me more than the former, which is mainly annoying as also mentioned above. Anyone else experiencing AirTunes dropout? I'm seriously considering wiping the whole drive next. But man, that's not my idea of a fun time.
