Mac OS X 10.4.1: iSync 2.0: Problems synchronizing; potential solution

by CNET staff

Readers note several problems with iSync 2.0 under Mac OS X 10.4.x, including persistent crashes when attempting to synchronize.

MacFixIt reader Graeme writes:

"Every time I try to sync my Sony Ericsson P900 the same problem occurs in Mac OS X 10.4.1 as occurred in Mac OS X 10.4 - the new iSync agent installed in the phone crashes and only some of the changes are made. I even wiped everything off the phone and tried to replace all data, but same problem occurs. No problem with Contacts, just iCal sync."

Julian Wright adds:

"There's a bug in Mac OS X 10.4 and Mac OS X 10.4.1 regarding the iSync menu: My SonyEricsson K700 is all set-up to use iSync and syncs perfectly. However, if I try to initiate a sync by using the menubar iSync menu 'Sync Now' option, the icon spins for a few seconds and does nothing. If I initiate a sync by clicking the Sync button in the iSync application it works. Strangely, if the iSync application is open, then the "Sync now" menu option does work, but not when it the iSync app is closed."

Potential solution MacFixIt reader Nicolai Amter reports that deleting the file: ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.HIToolbox.xxxxxxx.plist (the characters represented by xxxxxxx will be different on each machine) resolves a number of the aforementioned synchronization issues.

I'm using a SE P800 and am having similar problems. On 10.4 i eventually got it to sync consistently, however, after upgrading to 10.4.1 i have had no success. Everytime the sync begins, it crashes the iSync Agent on the phone displaying the message "program closed; reason USER; reason number 11".

This is the same message displayed when it gave some trouble in 10.4, but has now become a permanent fixture since the upgrade.
