iPhoto 5.0.3 (#2): Persistent crashes in "Edit" mode when browsing images; solution

Several users report repeated, inexplicable crashes under iPhoto 5.0.3 that it not occur under version 5.0.2.

MacFixIt reader Richard Hamilton reports that iPhoto 5.0.3 consistently crashes when attempting to rotate an image on his system:

"Crashed 5 times first night I installed new release. Always happened while saving edits. After crashes any rotated photos rotated 1/4 turn more. After 5 crashes I gave up and went back to Photoshop for editing."

More common, however, are reports of crashes whenever attempting to browse images in Edit mode by using the left and right navigation arrows:

"After the update, iPhoto now repeatedly crashes when I double click an image and then try to advance to the next using the arrows in the lower right corner. Could not use it last night."

This reader's case is similar:

"After installing the iPhoto update the application crashes when browsing photos. I have a G5 DP running 10.3.9. Never had any problems with iPhoto before this update."

As is the following:

"After applying the iPhoto 5.0.3 update under a plain OS X 10.3.8 system (the update is qualified for 10.3.3 and later), iPhoto frequently crashes when using the left/right arrow buttons to move back/forward between photos. This reproducible, latest after a dozen back/forward moves. After iPhoto crashes, edits since last launch of iPhoto are gone."

Peter Wood corroborates:

I have just upgraded to iPhoto 5.0.3 from 5.0.2, on a system that was already upgraded to Mac OS X 10.4.2. When I am in edit mode, and I hit the right arrow to move to another photo, iPhoto crashes. This happens every time I run iPhoto, and it even happened after I hit the 'Try Again' button and started it up with clean preferences. I have not yet tried rebuilding my library, but I would be a little wary of doing that in an application that already seems to have problems."

Potential Solution Some users have been able to resolve the crashing issue by holding down the Command and Option keys while iPhoto 5.0.3 is launching. This forces a re-build of the photo library, and may cause the crashes to cease.

I have no problems using iPhoto 5.0.3.
In edit mode, the left and right arrows work perfectly.

iphoto 5.03 262, OSX 10.4.2, Blue and white G3, 1meg ram. I have the same
issue of constant crashing just when i go to save an edited pic. Whether saving
by moving forward, clicking done, or just saving. I have filled out dozens of
error reports. This did not happen in the earlier version of 4.x. Thus, i repair
permission before iphoto launch, and this does help, a lot, but, not fool-proof.
Plus, I think since upgrading to 262, the issue has mostly gone away.

I am still running 10.3.9 but iphoto 5.0.3 has no crashes or
    reported issues.
Have tried rotating till blue in the face and it refuses to crash. Might be a prob with Tiger.

    iMac G5, 2G/1G/250/Tiger
Same problems as stated above. Crashes in double-clicking to open a photo,
also when trying to edit, also when trying to run a slide show. It eventually shuts
    itself down.

The same problems as mentioned above. I have a G4 DP dual 1 GHz mirrow
drive. I am using 10.4.2. After I installed the update and the iphoto started to
act up. One thing is in my mind now, problem all started after I upgraded to
    Tiger.
