Epson/G3 problems Several readers wrote to say that they were happily using their Epson printer on a G3 Mac without any problem whatsoever. Others wrote to confirm problems and offer some work-arounds. Here are the ones I found most promising:
I upgraded to the latest drivers. I had to delete the old version of the drivers before I installed, plus had to remove the Print Monitor and all the desktop printing stuff that came with the Mac OS system before it worked. I use the Epson background printer and have had no problems since.
I was getting unexpected quits from the Print dialog box. Epson recommended: 1) using the latest Epson drivers and 2) allocating more RAM to the programs I'm printing from and also the Epson background printing application. It worked. (Frank Ippolito)
The odds are the software CD in the box contains older versions of the drivers. Do not install them! Instead, download the newer drivers for the appropriate printer. Also, use the Apple peripheral-8 serial cable, part number M0197LL/B. This cable is wired properly for high-speed externally clocked GeoPort use (which the Epson uses). (Larry Bles)
Note: Although all three suggestions point to using the latest version of the drivers as a solution (especially note the 3.2BA update for the Stylus Color 600, posted February 10), some readers continue to report problems even when doing so. So it goes.
