b. Steve Riggins says that the Finder delays some readers report (such as when opening windows) may only occur when "slow speed" volumes are mounted (such as CD-ROM discs or network connections).
c. For some reason I could never diagnose, I kept getting "Installation stopped because of an error" message when trying to install the main system software of Mac OS 8. If I kept retrying, the message finally went away and the install proceeded apparently fine.
d. Putting the Finder into Simple mode, via the Preferences menu item, prevents the use of command-W to close windows. (Thanks, Kevin McMurtrie .)
Bille Maguire points out: "Putting the Finder into Simple mode prevents the use of any command keys except command-? for help. This even includes command-C and command-V for Copy and Paste. The command key shortcuts don't even show up in the menu."
e. Several readers are reporting menu display problems (such as white where there should be gray) within certain applications (especially ClarisWorks 4).
f. Several readers report that a Custom Install of Mac OS 8 (particularly the "Core System") does not install the Contextual Menus extension and neither is it listed as a separate item. Apparently, you need to do an Easy Install to get it.
g. Kaleidoscope should not be set to load prior to the Appearance Extension, or you will like get a crash. (Thanks, Maury McCown.)
h. Peter Hinely could not get his Epson Stylus Color 600 to work under Mac OS 8 until he switched it from the printer to the modem port.
i. Several readers have reported avariety of problems with AppleScripts not running properly in Mac OS 8. Script writers should know that Apple has a a whole web sub-site devoted to Mac OS 8 and scripting, including a list of bugs (first spotted this in MacInTouch).
