How to connect a Series 2 TiVo with an Apple AirPort (802.11b) wireless network

MacFixIt reader Alex King has posted step-by-step instructions for connecting a Series 2 TiVo to an Apple AirPort wireless network, unlocking some new functionality for the device.

"I successfully connected my Series 2 TiVo to my AirPort network (for retrieving the TiVo show data). This lets your TiVo stay connected all the time, no need to have it attached to a phone line for its 'daily call'."

King's process allowed him to cancel his landline phone connection, which can save anywhere from $20-$40 a month depending on location.

For the set-up, you will need a a PC (or Virtual PC) to run the WET11 setup program, a USB to Ethernet Adapter, I used a LinkSys USB100M, and a Wireless Ethernet Bridge. Full instructions can be found on this page.

Couldn't you just use the Linksys WUSB11 wireless USB access unit?

Wouldn't this eliminate the need for two pieces of equipment, the WET11 plus the usb to ethernet device?

Tremendous amounts of information on this and other TiVo tricks can be found at http://www.tivocommunity.com.

You can do this with a series 1 TiVo, too, if you're willing to open the box and install an etnernet card. I did this to mine (9thtee.com is a good source for those, insert "just a happy customer disclaimer"). And my Phillips 212 SA has been humming along with its 144 hours of capacity and an ethernet connection for many months now.
