Troubleshooting Safari 1.0 Beta: Preview in Dreamweaver MX; Banking sites; more
Preview in Dreamweaver MX Similar to our report regarding Adobe GoLive yesterday, several users are reporting an inability to access Safari as a Preview browser in Macromedia's Dreamweaver MX. Larry Fliegelman writes:
"When using Dreamweaver MX, I am unable to use Safari as the Preview. Safari is listed as an option. When Safari is already running no page comes up. When Safari is not already running, everything works fine."
Banking Sites After a week of successfully using Safari to access Wells Fargo accounts, users are now being greeted with the following error screen:
"For online access to secure sessions within wellsfargo.com, you must use an approved operating system and browser. Wells Fargo does not support the Internet device, operating system, or browser version you are using. To continue accessing your accounts online or other secured areas within wellsfargo.com, please use a supported operating system and browser."
Brett Wickens reports success with using the freeware utility Safari Enhancer to change the browser's user agent:
"I have Safari Enhancer installed (since it was released) and user agent was set to 'automatic.' I just set it to Netscape 7 and now Wells Fargo works. For some reason, 'automatic' no longer seems to mimic the right agent for wells fargo, so users should select a specific agent. Maybe Wells Fargo initiated some sniffing for Safari?"
UPDATE: Joe Muscara notes the following pertinent information from Wells Fargo's on-line FAQ. Other banks may be using the same methodology:
"For your protection Wells Fargo does not support beta versions of browsers. Wells Fargo tests new browsers to ensure they operate appropriately in regard to functionality and security. Even if a beta browser meets our security standards, software updates can unknowingly change aspects of how a program operates in regard to security. Therefore, Wells Fargo only supports final versions of browsers. [...] Under normal circumstances, Wells Fargo will support the final version of a new browser approximately two weeks after the final release date."
UNIX keyboard commands Jason Kacmarski notes that a number of UNIX keyboard commands for controlling the URL address field are accessible from within Safari:
"For example, hitting Ctrl-A will move the cursor to the beginning of the text field, Ctrl-K can be used to cut (remove) a line in the address field, and Ctrl-Y can paste it back. These are the only one's I've tried, but I'm sure many others will work as well."
