Tip: Auto-fill substitute for Safari, Chimera

Aside from tabs, form auto-fill functionality has consistently been referenced as one of the top requests for Apple's Safari browser. Chimera also lacks auto-fill capabilities.

Fortunately, there are some substitutes that can get the job done in a similar fashion.

Casady and Greenes's recently released SpellCatcher X 1.0 has a "glossary" function that allows acronyms for phrases and sentences you type repeatedly. John Griffin writes:

"After downloading Spell Catcher X grom Casady and Greene and trying it out, I discovered that the Shorthand (Glossary) feature can essentially do the same thing (as Internet Explorer's auto-fill). One just has to type a couple of characters in each field and the form you are typing information into will fill out."

CE Software's QuicKeys X offers a feature called "Type Text" that will automatically type predefined blocks of text with a keyboard trigger.

UPDATE: Peter Kelly suggests typeit4me, a small utility that expands abbreviations as you type. The tool allows users to define a number of abbreviations and the full text entries that they represent, which are generated even if you continute typing.
