Hacking Quark XPress for keyboard commands
We previously reported that under Mac OS X 10.2.x, there is a keyboard shortcut conflict between QuarkXPress' "Step and Repeat..." and Mac OS X's "Automatically Hide the Dock." Both functions use the same keyboard combination: Command-Option-D.
The previous published workaround involved an AppleScript, but David Jenner offers a more permanent solution that involves hacking Quark XPress via ResEdit:
"When I switched to OSX full time last summer I hacked into the Quark app with ResEdit (or other such tool) and changed the Option-Cmd-D shortcut to Option-Cmd-Z (or any other available letter you choose).Using David's method you can change and add various shortcuts to Xpress, and other applications, but be careful; tinkering with the shortcuts in ResEdit can have detrimental effects if you create a conflict for routinely used keyboard combinations."Start by making a copy of the QuarkXPress Application by option dragging to your desktop. All you have to do is open this new Quark application itself in ResEdit and find the MENU resource and double-click this pane. Scroll down until you find 1006 (the ITEM Menu) resource and double-click on that pane. Select Step & Repeat in the left hand panel and then change the letter in the right hand panel from a D to a Z. Close all the windows and save the changes, load up your new Quark and Hey Presto! you have solved your Dock popping problem. If you're happy with it working you can replace the old Quark Xpress logo with your new one."
