Sonnet G4/700 MHz and Power Computing PowerCenter 150
MacFixIt reader Neil reports that Sonnet's technical support department has confirmed an issue with the Crescendo/PCI G4 700 MHz/1MB when used in the now defunct Power Computing's OS-compatible PowerCenter 150 Mac.
Feedback on this issue? Drop us a line at late-breakers@macfixit.com.Resources"The with the card is that the Processor Speed and System Bus Speed will dramatically fluctuate, according to Sonnet's Metronome software.
"The utility will report a Processor Speed of 654mhz and a System bus Speed of 46.7mhz. Seconds later, the speed of the processor fluctuates down to a Processor Speed of 576mhz and a System bus Speed of 41.1mhz and up again.
"Sonnet's Technical Support representative continued by stating that the Sonnet Crescendo/PCI G4 700mhz/1M card does properly work in other PowerMac and Mac Compatible Computers.
"The representative suggested that I either wait for a fix or consider purchasing Sonnet's G4 800mhz PCI card which does work in a PowerCenter 150."

the Customer Support Department for Sonnet
Technologies. I would like to clear up some
misunderstandings regarding this post. There is no
issue or problem with the Crescendo/PCI G4 700, or
any other version for that matter. What is happening is
that there is a bug in the reporting software,
Metronome. This is a bug that has only shown up with
the G4 700 on a Power Center. It is imposable for the
card to change a computers bus speed on the fly as
described in the post. This situation has been brought
the attention of our software engineering group, and
they are seeking a resolution.
Again I would like to emphasize that this is not a bug or
problem with the processor card. The card is running
at full, advertised speed. It is simply a bug in the
reporting software, Metronome.
