New utility aims to fix Mac OS X 10.2.x SMB transfer problems

by CNET staff

A new utility dubbed CpMac 1.0 (listed in the "Utilities Updates" section below) is intended to fix previously reported problems that could cause SMB file transfers to result in corruption, or be aborted.

The tool's author writes:

"CpMac copies files via the cp -r command thus avoiding the (-50 error) you might get when copying files to Windows formatted/SMB disks. I have also added code to better handle characters the regular cp -r command gets hung on, such as question marks and other characters etc."

Using the cp command was previously noted as a workaround for the SMB file corruption/aborted transfer issues our first report on the issue, which also described that the problem occurs when connecting to an SMB share from Mac OS X via the Connect to Server box, for instance: " smb ://domain;username@server/share"

Some readers also report that not having any background applications running while doing an SMB transfer can help in avoidance of corrupt files or incomplete transfers.
