Troubleshooting Eudora 5.2.1 part 2: More on no-connection freeze

We previously reported a "freeze on launch" problem in Eudora 5.2.1, where the program will stall if a valid Internet connection is not available when it is opened. We now have some additional details:

  • If the connection is established while Eudora is "frozen", Eudora recovers (OS X)
  • This problem was present in the recent beta period.
  • Eudora 5.2.1 tends to spontaneously cause AirPort connections to dial an ISP even though it is not supposed to be checking mail automatically.

MacFixIt reader Peter Krug adds:

"The Eudora "freeze on launch" problem seems to be due to an inability to get ads from Eudora's ad server. When I am using my AirPort connection, but my base station is not dialed into my ISP, Eudora thinks that I have an internet connection because I have an IP address from the base station. I fix this problem by switching to a location that has the airport port configuration disabled. It quickly figures out that I don't have a valid IP address and gives up the hunt for the ads."
