Brother fixes Mac OS X printer driver problems

Brother announced new multi-function laser devices (print/scan/fax/copy) this week. But the big news for Mac OS X users is a set of new drivers (v1.3) that resolve a host of crashing issues with the older MFC units. Duplexing is now missing from the driver but "n-up" works without crashing the system and faxing from any application is supported in Mac OS X 10.2.x for the first time.

MacFixIt reader Barry Levine writes:

"Why would one buy such a device? Well, the MFC-4800 can be bought for well under US$ 300, prints 12 pages per minute, is a sheet-fed scanner/fax, has a phone handset and, now, supports faxing from your OS X Mac. I even can connect it via its parallel port to my old PC at the same time I have it connected to my Mac via USB. It's also dirt-cheap to operate It should be noted that their OS9.x drivers work (and support duplexing). I've given Brother so much grief over their drivers that I felt it important to publicly praise them now that they've finally corrected most of the problems."
