Troubleshooting Norton Utilities 8.0: Installation will fail without BSD subsystem

When you install Mac OS X from CD, you are given the option to leave out the BSD subsystem relied upon by a number of system components and third party software. Norton Utilities 8.0 is one application that will fail to install completely if the BSD subsystem is not present.

Users attempting to install the SystemWorks 3.0 package who do not have the BSD subsystem installed receive the following message:

"You cannot install this software on this Macintosh.

Symantec's technical support department writes:

"This error will often occur when the BSD subsystem is not installed in Mac OS X 10.2.x."

In order to check if a BSD subsystem is installed on your machine, open Library/Receipts and look for the file BSD.pkg.

If the BSD.pkg file is not in the Receipts folder, then the BSD subsystem has not been installed. You must reinstall Mac OS X and install the BSD subsystem. Once you have installed the BSD subsystem, you can install Norton Utilities 8.0.

    You don't have to reinstall the complete OSX in order to install the BSD
    subsystem. I had to do this recently on a Cube. I found the
    BSD install on one of the two OSX 10.2 install disks, under additional
    installations. Much easier than reinstalling the who operating system.

    True, but Symantec's technical support team recommends the re-install
    to prevent problems.

    It's been my experience that Symantec software causes more problems
    than its worth. I had to get Disk Warrior 3 to fix the directory damage
    that Norton Utilities created. So, I wouldn't take Symantec techical
    support's words on faith.

    I received Norton Utilities 8.0 last week and ran it over the weekend. It reported a problem on my boot disk - I booted from the NU disk and ran disk doctor. Disk Doctor destroyed my boot disk. Of the over 17 GB of information over 90% was lost!!!! So I tried Volume Recover.... It continued to destroy my disk!!!! I am just now back online but have MANY apps and work files to restore from backup. This is the most pernicious software I have ever encountered - I have been using Macs from the very beginning.....

    My computer is DP800-G4 with 1.5 GB memory running MacOS X 10.2.6.

    This happened to me in the past with NU 6.0. Did you find the reason or
    solution to the problem with NU 8.0?

    I received Norton Utilities 8.0 last week and ran it over the weekend. It reported a problem on my boot disk - I booted from the NU disk and ran disk doctor. Disk Doctor destroyed my boot disk.
