Apple Issues Security Update 2003-07-14

by CNET staff

As expected, Apple has issued Security Update 2003-07-14 for Mac OS X. According its documentation, this release addresses a potential vulnerability when a password is required upon waking from the Screen Effects feature, which could allow an unauthorized user access to the desktop of the logged in user.

The update is currently only available through the automatic Software Update function in Mac OS X.

Everyone would do well to check the reviews of this update on Version
Tracker. There are many negative reports which, considering the
problems with the last security update, suggests you avoid this
update unless you are willing to do a full backup first.

I installed the update (Secuity Update 2003-)everything now
freezes. Does any body know how to remove it, other than
reformating and starting all over again?

The negative reveiws you are reading are for the older update, 6-10-03. Look at the date of each post, as versiontraceker keeps track of things by name and then version...

The update doesn't seem to be taking. Everytime I install it, it installs,
optimizes, reboots, then the Software Update panel comes up again and
asks me to install it. What the heck's going on?
