Tip: Cleaning up the dock and starting from scratch
MacFixIt reader Corbb O'Connor sent in this request for help, bringing to the fore a conondrum faced by a number of other users:
"Recently, I accidentally dragged approximately 300 files to the dock. Is there a way to quickly remove all of these files rather than dragging-and-dropping all of them to the desktop?"
The easiest way to accomplish this task is to to search for the file: com.apple.dock.plist and delete it. Re-launch the dock either by re-launching the Finder or restarting your system. You can also use the shareware utility PrefsOverload to find this file and delete.

The following is not a cop-out:
Dragging that many files anywhere, to anything is ill-advised.
Next time, try Command-clicking (right clicking if you have a 2 button
mouse) the items then choose Open With... and choose the appropriate
application (like the one you just failed to drag and drop to). Much safer.
Dear APPLE:
Please put in a Dock preference to "Ask before adding
any|10|25|50|over 100 items"...
And/or:
Add "Undo" to the Dock for adding and removing! Simple...
