.Mac upgrades break compatibility with some Windows systems?

by CNET staff

MacFixIt reader Sebastiaan van Stijn notes that the .Mac bookmarks panel seems to be inaccessible when using Internet Explorer 5.5 under Windows 2000. It delivers the following error message:

"We note that you are not using a standards-compliant web browser. We want to help you remedy this situation and improve your experience on .Mac Bookmarks and the rest of the Internet. Click one of these download links to get and install your free browser upgrade."

UPDATE: Readers report that upgrading to Internet Explorer 6 for Windows 2000 resolves this problem.

I'm using .Mac bookmarks right now with IE 6 under Win2k and it works great.

I'm going home to my Macs now!

Weird... it was working on IE5.5 on W2K when they first announced Bookmarks. Now I get the same little warning page.

The first time I used my bookmarks online, I was using IE 5.5 too (on Windows NT). But, it stopped working.

The problem is, that I can NOT upgrade to IE 6 because then I will loose IE 5.5, and I simply need 5.5 for testing the websites I develop.

So, I now use Netscape 7 to view my bookmarks.

Still, I think it's a bad thing that Apple doesn't allow us to use bookmarks with IE 5.5. Have you ever seen a serious corporate site that says: "You can -only- view our homepage if you have the very very latest browserversion???"
