Troubleshooting Eudora 5.x: Sending messages to Outlook 2002 users

MacFixIt reader Stephen Bodner writes "I'm using Macintosh Eudora.  When I send attachments to users of Microsoft Outlook 2002 (Office XP), they don't receive the attachments OR don't get a paper clip icon to open the attachment properly."

According to Qualcomm, this is a known bug in Microsoft Outlook 2002 (Office XP) that prevents them from receiving attachments from non-Microsoft products (Microsoft bug fix number OfficeQFE:4781. As of this writing, Microsoft has planned an update to fix the Outlook issue.

Until Microsoft fixes the issue, Eudora users have reported success with the following work-around.  In your Mac Eudora, open a new message, then copy and paste the following text into that message:

<x-eudora-setting:9906>

The text will highlight in blue as a URL.  Double click on it.  In the new window that appears, change the following text:
  • from - %r: < %p>%p
  • to - %

Click Set Setting.

Now Eudora will send out a mangled 'Content-ID' header to trick Outlook 2002 (Office XP) into correctly interpreting the attachment. This change should not affect the way attachments are received by others who are not using Outlook 2002 (Office XP).

Why is this called Troubleshooting Eudora? It should be called troubleshooting Outlook problem number #129,300.

The setting for Eudora version 6.0B26 is different than what the
workaround shows in the MacFixit workaround instructions and I am
reluctant to mess with it until I understand the difference. It is
    %r: <%p>%p

Why the discrepancy on this default setting on my system?

The brackets were confusing our CMS, which interpreted the enclosed
data as an HTML tag. But your Eudora installation is showing the correct
    code. Sorry about that.

I am so glad that MS is finally acknowledging this issue and is going to fix it. It has caused a great strain for many of my Eudora using customers.

This is another workaround that has been pretty good at combating the problem. You can tell the Outlook recipient to go to the file menu and click on save attachment and Outlook will then recognize the attachment in the save window. The attachment is actually there intact, but Outlook is clueless.

WHERE'S THE BEEF (I mean text)!

Maybe I'm going crazy but after the "paste the following
text:" all I see is white space until the instructions
    continue with what to change.

What text string do you paste in the blank e-mail?

This problem has been VERY frustrating to me and I
NEED this work around to give to my Outlook
    encumbered associates!

I'm not crazy! I wrote macfixit and the author replied
saying something went wrong with the way the text
    posted. It's now been fixed.

I tried this with Eudora 6.0b26 and the result is that suddenly other
people do not get attachments from me any more, but everything has
become part of the message. That applies to both "Apple Single" and
"Apple Double" coding. Only "binhex" still works correctly. After setting
Eudora back to its default, people did receive correct attachments again.
