Mac OS X 10.2.8 released, problems noted

by CNET staff

Apple has released Mac OS X 10.2.8 via Software Update, skipping a public update campaign for Mac OS X 10.2.7 (10.2.7 only shipped with systems introduced in the past few months). According to a Knowledge Base document, these are some of the enhancements that are a part of the Mac OS X 10.2.8 Update:

  • Windows on external displays connected to some PowerBook computers are drawn better.
  • The Bluetooth menu bar item works better when a Bluetooth USB adapter is disconnected and reconnected.
  • Addresses a situation in which an external FireWire storage device would not become available (mount) and this message would appear: "A disk attempting to mount as 'unknown' has failed. Please use Disk Utility to check the disk."
  • Addresses an issue in which some Bluetooth devices may not be available after the computer wakes from sleep.
  • Addresses an issue in which some Bluetooth keyboards may show a delayed response when you press a key after the computer wakes from sleep.
  • Addresses an issue in which some iBook computers could make a clicking sound when using Mac OS X 10.2.5 or 10.2.6. Reduces a potential delay when removing some devices from the Bluetooth pairing list.
  • Addresses a potential issue in which an audio application can unexpectedly quit when a USB- or FireWire-based audio device is disconnected.
  • Bluetooth preferences correctly displays the Bluetooth menu bar item's status if the item was enabled elsewhere.
  • Includes several enhancements for Safari.
  • Includes support for USB 2.0 devices, including PCI and PC cards for computers that do not include USB 2.0 hardware.

Several of these issues were noted here on MacFixIt as problems with Mac OS X 10.2.6.

Two additional notes about Mac OS X 10.2.8: Safari is now at version 1.0 (v85.5). Also, this update did not include Java 1.4.1 Update 1 as it is still available as a separate download in Software Update.

Already users are noting problems, and solutions, for the new release:

PCI Cards Sergio Orrao describes a problem with the M- Revolution PCI audio card. So far the only solution is going back to Mac OS X 10.2.6:

"After upgrading to Mac OS X 10.2.8, the sound panel does not show the card anymore. The card panel says card is not there or drivers are not there. Rebooting with the older (10.2.6) system shows the card there working perfectly, so the driver of the M- Revolution PCI sound card aren't working with the new system (the drivers are the latest available here: http://www.midiman.net/support/driversearch.php, but unfortunately they don't work anymore - I tried reinstall them, no way).

MacFixIt reader Bryan Trumbull confirms this behavior. It looks like we will have to wait for a driver update from M-Audio.

Griffin iMic MacFixIt reader John writes "Installing the Mac OS X 10.2.8 update breaks compatibility with griffin iMic. Reverting AppleUSBAudio.kext version 1.7.7 to version 1.7.6 running under 10.2.6 eliminated compatibility problem."

Inside word at Apple was that this was not quite yet ready for release-some
things still needed tweaking-and sure enuff-I suppose we'll have to wait for a final
    10.2.9?

Folks contend that 10.2.8 was rushed out, apparently because of the
security fixes; but the question remains -- whatever happened to
    10.2.7?

10.2.7 was what the G5s were released with. Apparently 10.2.8
wasn't ready in time to be installed on them.

I repaired permissions before and after updating to 10.2.8 and I
have no problems with the Griffen iMic or with an Xitel Pro HiFi-
Link for digital audio out. I notice no difference in Safari
performance yet, but the About Safari window does show version
85.5. If your old Safari is located in a sub folder it will be left
where it is and the new version will be installed in the main
applications folder. Make sure you remove the older version
    manually.

My Safari shows the correct version 1.0 (v85.5).
But I have a question: If repairing permissions is supposed to fix
everything, why doesn't Apple's updater/installer run it during the
update/install process? It sits there for quite a
while "optimizing" -- it should repair things rather than mess them up!
So far my USB-connected DSP still crashes SoundOut.app when I plug/
    unplug it.

I had the same problem with my iMic. Thank you John for telling me the
    extension name.
Another work around for people who have this problem with the iMic
when updating to 10.2.8. Boot into OS 9, then
remove the Apple USB Audio.kext folder and exhchange it with version
1.7.6. I copied it into the sysem folder extensions.
I had 10.2.6 on an External firewire drive so I just copied the
AppleUSBAudio.kext folder over to the new system.
Now I can see the iMic again and I still have the 10.2.8 update, worked
like a champ. Again, thanks John. Repairing Permissions will not fix this
    problem.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. And it takes forever. And some people may want to tweak their permissions (e.g. me).

I've never, EVER had a permissions problem. Usually, possible 'problems' are with, say, apps that install from a disk image, which somehow happen to be world-writable (a huge security problem).

Well guys, I neither repaired permissions, nor instaled the old .kext - all
I did was to: 1. open the selected the internal mic and speakers (Input
and Output in the System Preferences &gt; Sound prefs pane), then quit
System Prefs. 2. Unplugged the iMic and plugged it back in. 3.
Reselected the "iMic USB audio system" and all is well. Perfect sound
again. I'm happy! (I hope this works for all.)

I repaired permissions before running the update, and after - just to be cautious and neat. A few minutes into running under the updated system though, I got a kernel panic, and running /sbin/fsck -y after a restart, got a listing of "a double panic going on here" on the console.
Looks to me like if anything is plugged into my FireWire port, I'll get a kernel panic. I've read about other users having what is probably a .kext-related problem on MacFixIt here through several updates, wondering why I was missing all the fun, but never had it happen to me until now.

    All installed in a breeze.
Only one problem noted: At restart after installing the upgrade, my main
display (Sony Trinitron 19" 420GS) boot in 640x480. The secondary
monitor (Sony Trinitron 17" G200) maintained the original resolution of
1152x870. After restoring the main monitor to 1152x870, I logout then
login and everything was fine with this display. Even after a restart, the
    resolution still was 1152x870.
    I noticed Safari running faster...
    Have all a good day!

I installed 10.2.8 on my G4/2x450/512 last night. This morning, told it to restart. It booted, but sat for about 30 seconds saying "Waiting for network initialization", then proceded with startup. Lo and behold, now I have no Internet connection! I'm online via cable modem, which has worked perfectly til now (in fact, the update downloaded over this same net connection that no longer works!) I cycled the cable modem, shut down completely and restarted, still not online. It always seems to pause at that same spot during startup. Network control panel says I'm using DHCP (as required), but the IP address is "self-assigned". Any help would be GREATLY appreciated...

10.2.8 has a new .kext for Gigabit Ethernet machines like yours and
mine. I think it's only busted for 10-T, but several of us have had
success reverting the .kext to the one from 10.2.6.

In /System/Library/Extensions you need to replace the
AppleGMACEthernet.kext (version 1.30) with the version of the same file
    from 10.2.6 (version 1.2.4)

    instructions.

I had the exact same problem and the solution in the Apple forums,
linked to by White Rose, solved the problem. Thank you all for your
    help!

Same problem here - I'm on an Ethernet network, and my G4 PowerMac is totally disconnected from the network (and thus also from the Internet) after upgrading to 10.2.8. Help!

Did you try the .kext fix I listed above? I haven't heard of any failures
that matched these symptoms that <i>weren't</i> fixed by it...

Has anyone done this update and *not* had this problem with their
    ethernet connection?

BTW, there is a combo 10.2.8 posted here now:

    From what I hear:
yes, people running at 100base-T full duplex are working, as are people
using airports and (possibly) people with different Ethernet chips. The
machines with the problems include the "Gigabit Ethernet" machines
with Intel chipsets (I think...), but may include others.
