Iomega claims problems with USB2.0 ports in Apple laptops

We received a report from Iomega representative Wayne Linder that the USB2.0 ports found on Apple's PowerBook G4 (Aluminum) and iBook G4 models do not wake from sleep properly, resulting in a lack of functionality:

"After a reviewer told us that one of our new Iomega USB 2.0 UltraMini flash drives failed to mount on his laptop, I did some checking. It seems that on the newer aluminum-clad G4's (and iBooks with USB 2.0), when the computer goes to sleep, the USB port does not properly come back after waking up. Some USB 1.1 devices will power up and mount, but no USB 2.0 devices will. I have duplicated this with our devices and USB drives from M-Systems, C-One, Sony, Lexar and SanDisk. It affects Mac OS 10.2.7, 10.2.8, and I'm currently verifying it with all versions of 10.3. Interestingly, this problem does not happen with the G5. Different chipset, I guess? Thought your readers should know since I have seen some posts in your and Apple's forums, but no solutions."

Thank goodness someone outside Apple looked into this. I have the
same exact issues with a 15" Aluminum Powerbook running 10.3.2 and a
SanDisk Cruiser 256MB Flash Drive. The only solution for me when the
unit doesn't mount upon insertion is to do a restart of the Powerbook. A
very annoying bug, which I think is in the hardware.

    I can confirm this also (15" AlBook 1Ghz, with a 256MB
Flash Drive). I noticed this as an 'intermittent' problem
in late December. Thinking about it, I had problems
whenever my laptop had been asleep, I just didn't
    realize it at the time.

it only happens on mine when it goes to sleep on its own, if i put it to
sleep manually the ports will be functional on wake

After reading the comment by netrag_dotmac about this port problem
not occuring when you manually put your 'Book to sleep I did some
    testing of my own.

I have a USB 2.0 Flash Drive which would intermittently stop responding
on my PowerBook but worked find on the desktop systems I plugged it
    into.

When I put my system to sleep (either by closing the lid or using the
'Sleep' command) the port would behaved as normal upon waking. But
when I changed the settings in the Energy Saver system preference pane
and let my 'Book fall asleep on it's own the problem surfaced ... it would
not acknowledge/mount the USB 2.0 flash drive. BUT my USB 1.0 flash
    drive mounted up okay.

Thanks for the heads up netrag_dotmac!! At least I have some degree of
control over when this happens until the issue is resolved.

This is good news of a sort. I just started using a brand new iBook G4 14" from work, and immediately ran into this problem with my PNY USB2 flash drive. I tried searching tech info at Apple, but couldn't turn up anything useful. The iBook is running 10.3 as it came from Apple. No updates of any kind have been applied to my knowledge.

I have a similar problem with my new 1.25GHz 15" AlBook. After waking
from sleep, I don't have any USB2 functionality. I must restart to get it
back. This typically occurred when I brought my PB back from work.

After much experimenting, I believe I found the problem:

If I run the PB at any time on battery, and then sleep it, and wake it up
again, I will lose USB2. If, however, I use the PB exclusively with the
power adapter, I never lose USB2 (ie. plug in at work, sleep, unplug, plug
    in at home, wake up).

I vaguely remember reading something somewhere about this being a
problem with the Power Management software or circuitry in the
    AlBooks.
