Apple updates AirPort software to 3.4

by CNET staff

Apple has updated its AirPort software components to version 3.4.

AirPort 3.4 provides:

• Improved antenna output control.
• Enhanced logging from your base station which is compatible with syslog.
• Performance improvements for WPA security implementations.

Apple AirPort Extreme 5.4 is base station firmware that includes the same enhancements and is included in AirPort 3.4.

Apple's release notes read "If you are using an AirPort enabled computer with an AirPort Extreme Base Station, you will experience maximum data rates of 11 Mbps. However with AirPort 3.4, you'll still enjoy significant benefits, especially from the standpoint of wireless printer sharing, easy base station administration, and many options for managing the range of your wireless network. "

"WPA requires an AirPort Extreme base station and AirPort Extreme or AirPort clients running Mac OS X v10.3, or later. Use of Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) reduces the maximum number of network users. Computers with wireless cards that only support WEP cannot join an AirPort network that has WPA enabled."

AirPort 3.4 is also available through Software Update.

Download went fine. Upon re-boot my AirPort signal on my 15 "Aluminum PowerBook 1.25Ghz 10.3.3 dropped from the 3rd line to the 1st line of the signal indicator on the menu. Substantial drop. I hope Apple either posts a fix or re-issues the previous version.

I also have had problems. Downloaded okay. Initially I saw a drop
in the indicated signal strength, although this has returned to normal
after a few hours.

The problem I have is that when I open the Airport Admin Utility I cannot
see my base station (white) and rescanning appears to do nothing (using
a network sniffer I see NO traffic being sent at all). The compensation is that
at least the network still works !

Same here! Same computer (Al PB 1,25GHz) and OS (10.3.3). Signal strength
in the menubar icon now shows only one bar or none at all!!! It usually
showed 2 or 3 bars before update!!! I am using a
Snow Airport base station (dual ethernet, 802.11b only). Is this a bug??? If so,
when Apple will fix this???
PS -> I didn't see any change in the battery life at all, as opposed to some
posts in VersionTracker.

My 15" Powerbook 1.25ghz airport signal streangth went down from 4-3bars
to 1-0bars. I am not sure if I lost the range in my airport card or if it is just a
software issue because I still have internet connection and I see no significant
drop in bandwidth.

Not only did I lose signal strength with this update, but on two separate
occasions now, I've lost my entire internet connection. What happens is this:
Airport reception still seems to be coming in and I still have an IP from the
router but all traffic in and out of the machine stops cold. I can't even
connect to the router. Only a restart fixes it. Anyone know what files I have
to replace in order to downgrade to 3.3.1?

Same problem here, but it doesn't have anything to do with my graphite base
station as my wife's powerbook, which is not updated with airport 3.4, still
works fine and can connect to the internet without a problem.

Before the update everything was fine.

Any ideas on how to downgrade to 3.3? I have tried to remove the receipts
and run an older airport installer but it tells me that i have a newer version
and can't dowgrade.

Haven't lost signal strength, but keep losing my wireless connection until I
restart my PowerBook. Seems to happen most when running Acquisition.
Other (non-upgraded and PC) computers on the same wireless network have
no problems. Turning AirPort off and back on does not help.

Forgot to mention, I'm using a D-Link 514 wireless router. Never had a
problem before the AirPort 3.4 update.

Same with me here on a G5, about 3 to 4 meters from Extreme station. Drops
from three up to none at all. On Macs with normal airport (not extreme)
things seem to work as before.

There is detailed explanation on how to downgrade at
http://homepage.mac.com/fishsun/articles/uninstall_airport34.htm

I haven't tried it yet.

Good luck

Same problem here also: PB 1.25 with AP extrem, 10.3.3.
With every update my reception dropped one bar. Thanks to the latest
update, my PB has only 1 bar left (although I?m using an external Dr. Bott
antenna).
Sad story!

Similar problem, 1.25 Mhz 15" PowerBook, Linksys-g basestation. According
to MacStumbler 30-40% reduction in signal strength. Loss was immediate
after upgrading. How do I "uninstall!"

I had absolutely no problems with this update. My signal is at least as strong as before and my Airport no longer disconnects itself randomly as it had done in versions 3.3 and 3.3.1. The sluggishness that was there before is also completely gone. I'm running OS X 10.3.3 and have a DSL connection.

I have had no problems with signal degradation since installing last night. I
have a 17 inch powerbook (1.33) running 10.3.3 and an Airport Extreme Base
Station.

Since installing the Airport 3.4 update via software update, several people
here have been having problems with our menu bar. The icons on the right
hand side of the menu bar come and go fairly rapidly. The symptoms are like
the ones we experienced after installing OS X 10.3 before an update came out
for Airport. Internet Connect crashes when it tries to launch.
On my machine, the problem causes a kernel panic after a few minutes.
The only solutions we have found so far is to use the Network Preference
Panel to disable the Airport connection or take the Airport signal strength
icon out of the menu bar.
The problem only occurs when you are talking to access points that are in
bridge mode. If they are doing NAT/DHCP, things seem to be ok.
