Apple releases iTunes 4.6: Fixes sharing problem with large libraries
Apple has released version 4.6 of its iTunes audio software via Software Update and Web download. According to the (brief) release notes:
"iTunes 4.6 includes support for playing your music wirelessly using AirPort Express with AirTunes. It also includes a number of other minor enhancements."
UPDATE We previously covered (1, 2) an issue where iTunes 4.5 would not share Libraries containing more than 28,899 tracks. We've received reports from several MacFixIt readers that iTunes 4.6 fixes this problem. Reader "Gryffin" writes:
"I just upgraded to iTunes 4.6 on both my server (PowerMac G4 667) and my "living room" computer (Toshiba Portégé 7200), and I'm happy to report that the Toshiba read all 21,543 songs from the server with no problem. In fact, while I didn't time it, it seemed to load them faster than it used to under iTunes 4.1."
An Apple Knowledge Base article about this issue has been updated to confirm this fix: "Update to iTunes 4.6 to prevent this from occuring."

from iTunes to my iPod. Unprotected songs copy fine. WHAT THE HELL IS
THIS!!! I paid money for my iPod and for the music! THIS BETTER BE A
MISTAKE!!!
Sounds like maybe playfair or hymn was used
to strip DRM code from those iTMS purchases.
Is that the case?
-HI-
I'm not the original poster, so I have no idea, but if such a program were used, would they not be standard AAC files and thus not protected? Hopefully the original poster will tell us, but I think this post refers to .m4p files with a type of "Protected AAC file", not .m4a and "AAC audio file".
I'm referring to PROTECTED (.m4p) files straight from the iTunes Music Store.
I downloaded the free song of the week, immediatedly tried to put it on my
iPod and iTunes would not let me. It prevented me from copying any of the
previously purchased songs onto my iPod. It looks like the only way for me to
get these songs onto my iPod now IS to strip the protection.
Plus, I've duplicated the problem. I have the same exact machine at home as I
do at work, Dual 1 GHZ MDD. Before I upgraded my home computer I was
able to copy a PROTECTED song from iTunes (4.5) to iPod (10G) with no
problem. I upgraded to iTunes 4.6 and now (5 minutes later) I have the exact
same problem as work machine. I can no longer copy PROTECTED songs from
iTunes to iPod. Since I can reproduce the problem it is not me.
Over at Gizmodo, they posted a fix for this problem. Look here:

This is not my problem. I'm talking about legally purchased, UNmodified
songs directly from the iTunes Music Store.
OK, the can't copy purchased/protected songs weirdness in gone. I was
checking all my purchased music and discovered that one song was no longer
authorized to play. After I re-authorized it, I could once again copy ANY
purchased/protected song to my iPod. Why having one unauthorized song in
my library prevented me from copying ANY purchased music to my iPod is
still a mystery.

(9 Comments)a shared iTunes library remotely would hang indefinitely if the library
contained more than 10k or so tunes.
Well, I just upgraded to iTunes 4.6 on both my server (PowerMac G4 667
upgraded to 2x1GHz, 1.5GB DRAM, OS X 10.3.4) and my "living room"
computer (Toshiba Portégé 7200, 500MHz PIII, 320MB DRAM, Win XP SP1a),
and I'm happy to report that the Tosh read all 21,543 songs from the server
with no problem. In fact, while I didn't time it, it seemed to load them faster
than it used to under iTunes 4.1.
