Apple has quickly released an update to OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, less than two weeks after its release on the 28th of August. The update addresses a number of small problems with the 10.6.0 release, and is recommended for all Snow Leopard users.

The fixes according to the updater are:

  • compatibility with some Sierra Wireless 3G modems
  • an issue that might cause DVD playback to stop unexpectedly
  • some printer compatibility drivers not appearing properly in the add printer browser
  • an issue that might make it difficult to remove an item from the Dock
  • instances where automatic account setup in Mail might not work
  • an issue where pressing cmd-opt-t in Mail brings up the special characters menu instead of moving a message
  • Motion 4 becoming unresponsive

The update is 75.1MB and is available via Software Update as well as from Apple's website. Be sure to back up your system before updating. For more information about the update, please see these knowledgebase documents:

An odd, but harmless thing happened after i installed the update. Upon restart, the setup assistant launched. i think that is what it is called. The icon is a cartoon suit. This usually launches after installation of a new OS from CD. But I don't recall it usually launching after updates like this.

Anyway it went through the "welcome" message that flies around in multiple languages with music playing just like a new OS install. Then when the "continue" button finally appear, I clicked it and the assistant just closed. I didn't get any "unexpectedly quit" message.

I have a 2.2GHz core duo macbook with 4Gb of Ram.

Installed SL update 10.6.1 and it breaks Intego Personal Antispam (v10.5.3). When starting Mail 4.1 I get a message that the PAS plug in is not compatible with Mail 4.1 and to contact the vendor. If I reconfigure the plug-in (turning it back on), Mail will turn it off again with the next opening.

It was working fine with SL 10.6.0.

Major problems with M$ Office apps, esp Word 12.2 after upgrading to 10.6 Snow Leopard. Under 10.6, Word was unstable, crashing occasionally. Under 10.6.1, essentially unusable - hangs/crashes constantly. Have cleared font caches etc. no go. Tried to reinstall latest updater for Office (12.2) but was unable. What now?

I had same issue..my solution that worked for me is as follows

UN-install M$ office using their Unistall tool
empty trash
restart mac
install rosetta
install office
restart mac

then things should be fine with office...the uninstall clears out a lotta files that could get corrupted
th resart help clear any other cache data

hope this helps you..paul

The update just cleared Port Mapping I had entered - no problem.

The install does not work on my MacBook Pro, either from Software Update or with the downloaded package from the Apple website. It stops after receiving the "Accept" buttons.

I am having the same problem and have tried disk utility on my HD and on disk for update

10.6 and 10.6.1 are really slow and unstable. Also can't open second HD until you do:

sudo chflags 0 /volumes/*

sudo chmod a+rx /volumes/*

in terminal.

When you say you can't open a 2nd HD, are you referring to an external HD or internal? Many of us have had an issue with our external HD not being recognized by SL, which wants to initialize it.

That is fairly horrible advice. It will apply those permissions to your main boot drive as well as to other volumes. If you insist on doing this, at least run a permissions fix afterwards.

None of my installers will work, including the one for this update. Nothing happens after I click agree on the licensing agreement. Any suggestions?

After the 10.6.1 update, security update and the i tunes update I get this when I repair permissions.
Repairing permissions for ?Macintosh HD?
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAgent" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DesktopServicesPriv.framework/Versions/A/Resources/Locum" has been modified and will not be repaired.

Permissions repair complete

I my Safari browser also seems to have slowed down quite a bit? Any sugestions?

Mail is only half usable. Keychain is on life-support. .Mac prefs seem mentally deranged. I think they are all related to a Keychain problem.

Mail refuses to keep/use the known, good pw for my ISPs smtp server, thus I can no longer send email. Occasionally
iDsk will tell me I don't have a valid password set in .Mac.

Numerous threads at Apple's Forums. No one seems to have a solution. Mine will be to return to 10.5 tomorrow! Ridiculous! 8-|

I hear ya! by new iMac is not worse of after 10.6.1 than it was prior. After the update my Safari started crashing, so I tried downloading the newest version and can't install it, I get a message that states 'Safari can't be installed on this disk. This update requires Mac OS X 10.5.8 or newer.'

I had updated to the Snow Leopard version of CandyBar prior to the update and it now thinks I'm running an incompatible OS and won't let me switch back to my default icons. I tried changing them via 'Get Info' and found I can't change them there as well.

My computer won't use the Snow Leopard disk to boot so I can run the utility programs, instead it just pops the DVD right back out.

So my question is this, did Apple provide and update or a virus?

I ran into the SMTP bug myself with our institutional SMTP server. Apparently automatic setup is too clever by half. The workaround is to manually set the SMTP port to 25 (which should be the default anyhow). Then it works. See at this link:

A number of problems with my 13" late 2008 MacBook from losing functionality on new HP printers to losing internet connection when running under AirPort. HP Officejet 6500 Wireless (running ethernet into Time Capsule) lost the two sided printing feature even with box checked to allow two sided printing. MB drops out randomly and nothing seems to bring it back until it has been totally shut down for 5-10 minutes and then restarted .Connects into network but will not connect to internet. Wifey's MB Pro running SL runs fine. This is a real disappointment from Apple.

I've had no end of problems with Snow Leopard with just the simple things, Mail and Safari. I'm continually getting the colored wheel of death with both programs especially if my iMac has been asleep. Mail messages don't load all the time. safari takes FOREVER to load some pages or I get the wheel of death again. I've loaded the update 10.6.1 and that doesn't seem to help. Also when I go to shutdown my machine, it won't. I'm about to switch back to Leopard.

I've updated my early unibody MacBook Pro - and had the same network issues. My wife's MBP (still on SL 10.6) connects fine, as does my studio Mac Pro, also running 10.6. As it's my main work machine for podcasting and video production, I'm tempted to steer clear of 10.6.1 for the time being. And my MBP is being downgraded as I type. Grrrrrr.

This is not good Apple.

*Side note: I DID have intego security suite installed from an evaluation I did a while ago. I'm ditching that too as it really doesn't like SL at all...

Nikki.

After installing 10.6.1 the icons for Pages and Final draft alias documents which I leave on my computer screen, no longer load. A shadow icon appears and I must move the shadow icon back to the file where the document is stored, then move it back to my computer screen before I can see it. I use a 24" I-mac intel with 2G of memory

Hey I'm having the exact same issue. Discovered it after not being able wake up the screen after the MBP was put to sleep. I can feel the HD spinning, but no screen, completely out, only remedy is to hold done the power button until I reboot. Interested to learn the fix?
