AirPort dropouts in Snow Leopard

Many users have been finding that under Snow Leopard they are having dropouts while using wireless internet via AirPort. Most users report that other non-Mac machines on the same network have no issues connecting using wireless and all wired connections are fine.

Apple Support Discussions user "Torn Barb" reports:

I have a MBP with SL installed, ATT U-verse with a 2-Wire wireless router. I've had no problems with my connection until the update to SL. My pings are good, MBP hardlined in works with no issues. I have a server hardlined, gaming console hardlined, no issues. I've checked all my settings on the MBP and nothing that I see is set to cause the network drops. Same goes for the 2-Wire. I did some test by setting up my Linksys wireless router, the MBP continued to drop the signal.

Other users echo the problems "Torn Barb" has seen. After a series of failed troubleshooting attempts "Torn Barb" reported a solution that seems to have worked:

Changes made:
  1. Turned off auto channel and made a dedicated one [choose a single channel (i.e., 3 or 9)]
  2. Changed my network [security] to WPA
I did some more research and contacted a few of my network friends about the issue and they have stated that Snow Leopard is having issues with auto channel on certain routers. Not saying that Snow is having issues with auto channel or WEP vs. WPA all the time, just certain routers.

Other troubleshooting tips for networks include:

  • Delete unused locations from your Locations list (System Preferences > Network > Location > Edit Locations)
  • Delete unused networks from your Preferred Networks list. Be sure your home network is first on the list. To delete networks, click the Advanced... button in the Network System Preferences. Highlight a network and click the minus (-) button. You can click and drag networks to reorder them in the list.

I have the exact same problem. My Imac would not connect yet my HP is fine on my network. I now have the mac on ethernet connect and the HP is still operating fine on Airport.

Quite honestly, if you're going to use auto-channel - you need to be given a public flogging.

In my neighbourhood alone there are inconsiderate a**holes who erect wireless networks with no consideration as to what other people use as their channel. The auto-channel just doesn't work - if it did, my router wouldn't be sharing a channel with 2 other routers in the area.

I'd use Channel 13 if I could but thanks to Dell's crappiness, I can't :(

Btw, who is using WEP? do you want your computer hacked and personal information stolen?

My Macbook Pro was dropping out and I think I found the solution. In an apple forum, among other things, they said to log onto your wireless router, mine a Trendnet, and change the settings from mixed mode b/g/n to g only. Thus, I am using wireless g capability only on a wireless n router and mac. This is not too bad since my internet connection is only about 1M anyway where g is capable of 54M and I'm not sharing any files. My Brother networked printer is at 11M, well below 54M, networked to both windows pcs and the mac. If have only had it set this way for a short time but it seems to have survived the acid test.

I upgraded from OS X 10.5.8 to SN on my Macbook. Ever since, I have experienced a persistent problem with dropouts. Orginally when I connected via Airport to my Linksys wireless router, a dropout would occur about 1 minute after booting my computer. This problem was apparent at two other locations tested with different wireless routers (although the connection time until dropout was a couple of minutes longer).

Upgrading to 10.6.1 and restoring 10.6.0 didn't help. My local Mac technicians were unable to identify any problem so I ordered a new Airport card. This did not solve the problem at the shop but when I brought my computer home, miraculously there was no dropout! Certain that the problem had been resolved, I upgraded SN to 10.6.1. Big mistake! Now my Airport cannot even detect nearby wireless routers

I reinstalled 10.6.0 and ran Disk Utility which verified that my files were fine. Still no connection.

My network security is WPA local. I have deleted any unused locations and unused networks.

My technical experts say the problem could be the logic board and I should wait until 10.6.2 to see if it resolves the problem or buy a new computer. Any better suggestions?

I had a similar issue when I upgraded my iMac and MBP (new) to Snow Leopard. Tried all the usual fixes and finally ended up calling Apple.

What I ended up doing was flashing my TimeCapsule (1GB, though I doubt that makes any difference), loading an earlier version of 10.6, then reloading the newest 10.6.1 patch. All Better.

Hope this helps.

I had a similar issue when I upgraded my iMac and MBP (new) to Snow Leopard. Additionally, I could not print (or even SEE the printer (HP7960), although it did show my Epson flatbed scanner correctly. The error message said that there was no printer attached. I tried all the usual fixes (different cable, direct connect with CAT 6 ethernet to confirm that the printer was functioning (it was when wired)), and finally ended up calling Apple.

What I ended up doing was flashing my TimeCapsule (2 month old, 1GB, though I doubt that makes any difference), loading an earlier version of 10.5 (printer worked fine on Leopard wired or wireless), I then upgraded to 10.6 again, followed by a download of the newest 10.6.1 patch. All Better.

Hope this helps.

As soon as I changed my routers (Netgear MIMO "G" and AT&T 2Wire "G" Gateway) from WPA2 to WPA, all of my connectivity issues disappeared. Great range, absolutely no failures.

I gave up on trying to get Snow Leopard to connect on my Mac mini (late 2007 rev) that was upgraded with an 802.11n Airport Extreme card. I tried everything I could, even installing the driver from Leopard, but nothing worked. Leopard worked fine. So did Windows 7 RC1, which picked up the wireless card without extra drivers even.

Good call. I've been in airport hell since the update. I have 5 airport express units that drive speakers and printers, those join an airport extreme network, that feeds an i-mac, MBPro, MBAir, & I-phone 3G. My speakers have dropped out worse since the update. Hours on the phone with tech support at Apple. They're very polite, and helpful, but helpless. We selected channel 1 (took it off auto) and it seems to work better since that. Yeah, we'll get there.

For several days in a row, I was losing connectivity in the early evening only. Very strange. Other computers on the wireless network had no problems, including one other that was running Snow L.

From the start, I had the network set to a specific channel and WPA security.

I wound up taking the computer in to the AppleStore and they wound up (after one false start) doing a Snow L reinstall. I?m not convinced that the problem?s gone, but I?m keeping my fingers crossed.

One thing that the reinstall did is clear out all my locations and my preferred networks, so my two preferred networks are now my home and workplace. We?ll see.

I have the same problem with the connection except for one difference. After update to 10.6.1 all worked fine for several weeks, then the problem arose. No updates just before the problem started. Periodically airport works fine, but other times can't maintain the connection for much more than a minute. Other computers work fine. Doesn't matter which router (I have 2) or n or g. All the same symptoms. Am about ready to reinstall 10.6 and see if that fixes the problem. Apple has clearly issued something that is not stable. I'm stunned that the problem hasn't been at least acknowledged.

I've tried to resolve my issue by doing everything listed in this article and other recommendations in all the forums. My brand new iMac running OS X 10.6.1 (not even one day old) won't even connect wirelessly to my 2wire router from AT&T Uverse!! My 2006 Macbook Pro connects without any problems! I've called ATT Tech support, but my new mac is still not connected. I have yet to get in touch with Apple customer support because they aren't 24/7! I refuse to buy an airport extreme since a brand new mac should be able to do what a '06 mac can do - if not better! Are there any other solutions I haven't tried yet?? I even took my network password off, to no avail. =(

Similar problem here, running S.L on a macbook pro core duo. Conenction timeout drove me freakkin nuts, and frequest connection dropouts. My roomies Dell laptop runs like a stable workhorse. So much for my discussion with him last week abt OS X. It does not even connect to my linksys router no matter if its WPA, WEP security or whatever. So had to use AT&T's default modem/router. Leopard was rock solid, yeah occasionally I had to tell airport what my network was. How can Apple get away with this!?

Same problem here with my MacBook, plus one other -- airport sees the networks but does not join them automatically. Even when I try to join them manually it takes a long time and several rejections.

Upgraded to Snow Leopard and the problems started. Upgraded the firmware on my Belkin G router; helped for a day. Struggled with various other attempts to solve the problem. Finally bought an Airport Extreme; that made the situation slightly better.

Meanwhile, throughout this ordeal my wife's Dell laprtop and the Dell laptop issued by my job worked perfectly. I still have a problem with my MB and the Dell's still work perfectly.

Remind me again why I spend extra to buy Macs.

same here. deeply regret switching to SL just to get a bit faster (stupid as the 8 cores are idle anyhow).

I have two airport express that provide cover for my house. For years did not have a problem with that setup and a macbook, iTouch, iPhone, a macpro, an old sony notebook as well as countless visitors. But since SL upgrade the connection throughput (I use menumeters) often drops to zero and Safari tells me it cannot find the server although it just browsed fine! The funny bit is that sometimes a download in Safari continues while any new connection fails and iChat etc. drop the connection. Weird! I also noticed that the express station starts flashing amber and then goes back to green every once in a while... like it was confused by SL.

Switching airport on and off in the menu normally gets a bit of life back into the story but on a bad day I have to do it every 5 minutes.

I tried the channels plus I switched from no encryption to WPA2 both to no avail. I also checked interference robustness but again no success. Most macs are now on fixed IP which seems not to help either.

I'll try the location delete and preference file stuff but cannot express enough how very disappointed I am with Apple!!!

PS> oh yes, the samsung CL 300 printer does not work any longer. never really did cooperate well with the airport :-((
