Microsoft has decided to continue support for one of the most popular application suites on the Mac, Microsoft Office:mac 2004 until 2012. Mainstream support, which includes security updates and bug fixes will continue until January 10, 2012. Mike Tedesco reports on the Mac Mojo: The Office for Mac Team Blog that although most users have upgraded to Office:mac 2008, several users continue to use Office:mac 2004 to take advantage of Visual Basic for Applications, a feature not included with 2008.

If I were Steve Balmer, I would package Office with the current Windows operating system and sell them to the Mac users. Since all the new Mac's run Windows, it would be a clever way to increase the sales of the Microsoft operating system; but since I use Macs, I hope that they don't do this.

This makes no sense whatsoever.

Can anyone confirm the rumor i have heard a few times that this is the last year for Entourage? That it is to be replaced by Outlook for the Mac.

I'm hardly a "reliable" source, but as I understand it Entourage will be replaced by Outlook in the next version of Office for the Mac. It will also restore VBA for the "several" Mac users who need it. The absence of full Outlook support on the Mac has been a sore spot for Mac Office users for a very long time. Ironically, by the time we finally get it, support for Exchange Server in Snow Leopard may have made Outlook all but irrelevant for most users.

As for wrapping Office for Windows in with Microsoft Windows for Mac users, it is highly improbable. Windows is already too expensive. Even if it could be sold at a viable price, such a combo package would cannibalize Office for Mac sales. People who need to run Office on Windows will buy Office for Windows anyway - precisely because they need it. Now including an Office upgrade with a Windows 7 upgrade might be a good idea - for everyone, not just Mac customers. But I don't see Microsoft doing that. And such an upgrade would probably not work unless you already have a version of MS Office, just as the "affordable" Windows 7 upgrade won't work if you don't already have Vista or XP. Microsoft is funny that way.

Not a rumor:
