Apple has released an update to iMovie, bringing the version to 8.0.5 and adding improved compatibility with video capture devices. The update is 35.56MB and should be available through Software Update for people with iLife installed. It can also be downloaded here.

Specifically, the update includes the following:

  • Improved compatibility with camcorders using the iFrame video format

  • Improved compatibility with importing video captured on the iPod nano

  • Fixed problems with resizing the iMovie window during playback

The update is recommended for all iMovie '09 users, and requires OS X version 10.5.6 or later. If you are running a camcorder that uses the iFrame format, this update might be particularly useful for you, though in order to have an iFrame-capable camera you would have to go out and buy one of the first two released by Sanyo today.

CNET editor Jim Dalrymple has an article on the new iFrame format, with links to the cameras that support the new format. Check out Jim's article here: http://news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-10374263-37.html

Just tried to install the iMovie 8.0.5 updater. I get the spinning beachball. Same via either Software Update or direct download. The .dmg won't mount and hangs the mounter.

Running new IMovie 8.0.5 on an Intel Quad 2.66 under 10.6.1. When I start IMovie a message stating that critical components of Quicktime required to handle HD movies are missing and I have to re-install IMovie. But, I can't install I movie because it was preinstalled on the computer

You should have an iLife disk that came with your computer, unless you purchased it second-hand and the seller did not give you a disk.

Tkessler suggested that I should have a disk for IMovie. I don't, but I do have, in the box sealed carton I received, a Mac Pro Applications Install DVD, Disk version 1.0..When I run it, and select "custom install", the choice for IMovie is 'grayed'out. So, I don't see a way to "reinstall it as the application requests.

very strange.... iMovie 8.04 says it is "current version" but after 3 tries ,Software Update now says 8.05 is available?

iMovie 8.05 "minor update" - freezes / hangs and freezes the Finder too. Uninstall, re-install did nothing but delay the onset of freeze until you try to do anything at all with it.

Have Apple let its customers know how many hours per week they expect us to lose trying to use their products, will ya?
