Apple releases OS X 10.6.2 and Security Update 2009-006

Apple has released the 10.6.2 update to OS X, which addresses a number of issues in Snow Leopard pertaining to graphics, systems unexpectedly logging out, the guest account bug, incorrect icons being used for contacts, and application support for Apple's application suites and built-in programs like Safari.

OS X 10.6.2 Update

The 10.6 system update is available through Software Update, and is also available at the following locations:

OS X 10.6.2 Combo updater
OS X 10.6.2 Delta updater

The update is pretty large, weighing in at 473MB and 479MB for both the delta and combo updaters, respectively. This indicates that the update addresses a number of items that were already addressed (in part) in the 10.6.1 update.

UPDATE: These sizes are what is reported on Apple's site, and does not observe what will be updated for specific machines and current OS installations. When you use Software Update your machine will specify what it needs to download from Apple (approx 500MB for some, and 150MB for others); however, if you download the delta updater then the all the changed files will be downloaded in the package and your machine will then install the needed ones from there. The combo updater, however, will install and overwrite all files to bring your system from any version of 10.6.x to 10.6.2, so it will always be bigger than the delta updaters.

Specifically, this update addresses the following areas:

  • an issue that might cause your system to logout unexpectedly
  • a graphics distortion in Safari Top Sites
  • Spotlight search results not showing Exchange contacts
  • a problem that prevented authenticating as an administrative user
  • issues when using NTFS and WebDAV file servers
  • the reliability of menu extras
  • an issue with the 4-finger swipe gesture
  • an issue that causes Mail to quit unexpectedly when setting up an Exchange server
  • Address Book becoming unresponsive when editing
  • a problem adding images to contacts in Address Book
  • an issue that prevented opening files downloaded from the Internet
  • Safari plug-in reliability
  • general reliability improvements for iWork, iLife, Aperture, Final Cut Studio, MobileMe, and iDisk
  • an issue that caused data to be deleted when using a guest account

More detailed information on the update can be found in this Apple knowledgebase document: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3874

Specifics on the security content of this update are outlined in this knowledgebase document: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3937

Security update 2009-006 for OS X 10.5

In addition to the 10.6 update, Apple has released a security update for OS X 10.5, which provides the same fixes for the 10.6 update that pertain to Leopard users. This update is 143MB and should be available through Software Update, and also at the following link:

Security Update 2009-006

As always, be sure to fully back up your system before applying these updates. Additionally, unless the update is needed, give it a few days to allow others to test it out before installing, so you can be sure the update properly addresses problems and does not introduce new ones.

I updated to 10.6.2 using Software Update within Snow Leopard. The file size was only 157 MB. What might be the reason for a file size one third of what is published as the file size at this site? Anyone know?
Best,
Richard

MacFixit is simply wrong. The Delta update is 157MB for 10.6.1. It may be 473MB if you're updating from 10.6.0.

My update was also 157MB using Software Update, by the way. The two links provided by MacFixit don't make any sense even though they are to Apple's site.

Wow, Mac updates are much more confusing and much larger than windows updates.

So?

Is Microsoft contracting out and paying commenters to generate bad buzz Apple and positive for MS?

Apparently, many users still do not know the difference between the Combo and the Delta versions of these updates.

Software Update provides the update version for the machine on which the app to be updated is installed. It is smaller than the Combo update because the Combo contains everything necessary to update the app, no matter which machine is being updated.

nationalreview is just a hater who joined a month ago to make his 76 comments. Microsoft would not stoop so low as to have an illiterate make their comments.

The only thing confusing is why he doesn't get a job - or if he has a job, why doesn't he work.

Mac updates are definitely not confusing. They just require user participation, not something to be done in secret where the user does not know what is happening to his machine.

Updated with the combo (as always). While it took a bit of time to download all went well. Nothing exciting, no muss, no fuss, no bother.

That's strange. I'm on 10.6.1 and MY update was 499mb not 157mb

Weird. Mine was 476.7mb. What could be the reason for these discrepancies?

Did you run the Combo Update?
Did you boot into Safe Mode to Install the update?
Mine worked perfectly on iMac and MacBook (early 2009)
I hope you did a full bootable backup before installing?

There are two kinds of update. One which is machine specific and comes to via Software Update.

The other is a DMG file which can be used for any Intel Mac and is known as the Combo update.

I always use the Combo updater, which in my opinion is safer.

from the following KB Article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3874

"Note that an update size may vary from computer-to-computer when installed using Software Update."

I've seen 3 or 4 different sizes for the Delta update via SWUD. This, I believe, is a first for OS X Updates!

Did it fix the wireless issue? My laptop stays connected but the bandwidth dies after awhile. I know a lot of people had this problem.

As reported to me a month ago by Embraceware, Apple in 10.6.2 fixed support for third-party applications' use of the Apple Remote. (This is not detailed on the update page.) I can now, for example, use my remote to control Awaken or VLC Player without causing iTunes to play/pause, etc.

Restarted my iMac (Early 2009) after DL-ing the Combo. Started up in Safe Boot mode by holding down the Shift key. None of the files in my Downloads folder had icons - just plain generic icons. Double clicked on the 10.6.2 Combo updater and it started Disk Utility instead of just mounting the disk image on the desktop. So I clicked on the Combo dmg in the left hand pane and clicked on Mount to mount the disk image. When the disk image mounted the .pkg file also had just the generic icon. When I clicked on the .pkg file it asked which application I wanted to open it in. I then right-clicked on the Combo disk image in Finder and selected Open using Installer. This began the install. No other problems during or after the update. I then restarted it (took a while which I expected anyway). All icons restored on normal restart. I then repaired permissions, and restarted again - very slow getting to show the login window (maybe 4 minutes or so) but everything is now working fine. A bit strange not seeing the icons when booting into Safe Boot mode. Never had that since (10.0 upwards).

Not completely unusual update. Makes me re-think my usual update strategy, which used to be to install Apple Mac OS X updates once they are available. Losses after this one are as follows:

1. Camino 2.0RC crashes on launch, the problem is documented here:
http://crash-stats.mozilla.com/report/list?product=Camino&platform=mac&query_search=signature&query_type=exact&query=&date=&range_value=1&range_unit=weeks&do_query=1&signature=MacOSFontEntry%3A%3AGetFontID()

2. Mail plugins may be disabled, in my case it was GrowlMail (1.2).

3. QuickTime plugin has crashed in the latest Google Chrome build on this webpage:

Hi guys,

After updating to 10.6.2, the sound on my MacBookPro went dead, I checked in System Preferences and for some reason Soundflower (2ch) was selected instead of internal speakers, I've never used this option before. What's even weirder is that when I restart the machine it goes back to Soundflower (2ch) instead of staying on internal speakers where I set them up before restarting. Maybe this is a new bug left behind when releasing the new OS10.6.2? Please let me know if I'm the only one with this problem. Thanks.

I installed 10.6.2 with the combo updater with no problems. However, since the update, a number of items no longer appear in the menu bar--like sound volume, fast user switching, etc. System preferences won't let me check the appropriate check boxes.

Try removing the com.apple.SystemPreferences.plist file from your /username/Libarary/Preferences/ folder and try relaunching the system preferences again.

Thanks for the suggestion, tkessler. Unfortunately it had no effect.

So I guess that 10.4 will not get the security updates anymore. It doesn't seem that long ago that I updated from Panther to Tiger because Panther was no longer supported. Lucky that I bought a copy of Leopard for my last PowerMac before 10.6 came out. Time to upgrade I guess...

You can always buy older OSX release through third parties, and at quite a discount from their original price.

I found a solution to my previously reported problem with the menu bar after installing 10.6.2. There?s a reference to the same problem at <http://www.mymacosx.com/tricks-and-tips/10-6-2-caused-empty-menu-bar-spotlight-icon-disabled.html>, but their solution looked a bit involved. I normally have the Spotlight menu bar icon hidden using Spotless, and therein lies the problem. Here?s the procedure I used to fix it, again using Spotless (registered version):

(1) Open Spotless preferences and uncheck the box to hide the menu bar icon. Close the preferences window and exit Spotless. Nothing much happens at this point (!) except that any existing menu bar icons move over a bit.

(2) Open Spotless preferences again and check the box to hide the menu bar icon. Close the preferences window and exit Spotless. Miraculously, the clock and all the other menu bar icons now appear!

I hope someone at Apple takes note of this problem and fixes it.

Since the 10.6.2 update all the colours on my screen seem washed out (Using DVI output/input).Damn!
I also had a problem with no audio output but I fixed this in System Preferences. The update changed the input/output to SoundFlower for some reason.Damn!

Anyone with any advice for my washed out screen problem?I would really appreciate it.Damn!
