10.6.2 update problems report

After Apple's release of 10.6.2 yesterday, I installed it and as with many people I had no trouble with the update. The updater downloaded and installed without a hitch, and 10.6.2 feels for me very much like previous versions of Snow Leopard. Despite this and other success stories, a number of early adopters have discussed a few minor problems that have cropped up, which include no sound after updating, and issues with the updating process.

No sound after updating

This seems to be the most widespread problem with the 10.6.2 update. After installing and restarting people have found that the system will not output any system sounds whereas some applications seem to be outputting sound just fine. This is primarily because the system has reset the sound output device in the System Preferences, and most people with this problem have been able to tackle it by selecting the proper output device again in the "Sound" system preferences. It seems for these people the update has changed the output to read "Internal Speakers."

Others with this problem have found a fix by downloading and installing the "Combo" updater, which is a more global approach to tackling odd problems that crop up in the update process.

Pausing at the blue screen

A second issue is some users' systems pausing at the blue screen upon rebooting. Apple has mentioned that for 10.6 they put in great effort to avoid hangs the blue screen, but it seems it could still pop up. If you see a blue screen, the first thing to do would be to sit back and wait for it to complete whatever it's doing. Many times people force the system to restart when waiting 5-10 minutes could allow the system to pass this screen and boot normally. In most cases, the blue screen will appear only once, and upon a successful boot will not show again.

If the screen persists, you can try booting off the Snow Leopard DVD and run a permissions repair on the boot drive using Disk Utility. While you're at it you can also run a disk verification and repair. With this done, reboot the system and hold the "Shift" key to get into Safe Mode, and hopefully once you pass the blue screen it will not show up again.

If you are only able to boot into Safe Mode, use the ethernet to connect to the internet (wireless may be disabled) and download and run the "Combo" updater. One suggestion I have is to always download the combo updater and keep it on a DVD somewhere before updating, so you can easily access it in the event of an update error.

Problem updating..."error has occurred"

A number of people have tried updating only to have the process stop half-way through with the warning "An error occurred and the installation cannot be completed". If you are able to install, the first recommendation is to try the combo updater to manually install all the files that have been updated since the initial 10.6.0 release.

Despite this, some people still run into problems with the "combo" updater, but have found that applying the standard "delta" updater seems to work. If you cannot get any updater to install, try running a permissions fix on the boot drive using Disk Utility, and try running the updaters when booted into "Safe" mode. if this does not work, the last suggestion is to reinstall 10.6.0 from the Snow Leopard DVD and then try updating.

OS X 10.6.2 Combo updater
OS X 10.6.2 Delta updater

Doing this should be straightforward any not require you to change any settings in the installer, and the installer should automatically archive and install your system, and keep your user data and applications. After this is done, try updating the system again. Keep in mind that some applications may need to be reinstalled after you do this, but those that require this should be relatively few.

It looks like the 10.6.2 update once again downgraded my version of flash player - not good... Anyone else?

No, I am not seeing that. My Flash player remained at 10.0.32.18, the most current.

Update - I have installed 10.6.2 on 9 Macs. Each then needed the most recent flash ver. 10.0.32.18 (again).

Not sure what's going on with your system. Several SL updates I've done have had Flash 10.0 r32 installed and maintained through the update.

The 10.6.2 update disables certain Mail Plug-ins, specifically it disabled Letterbox and Mail Attachment Iconizer. There is a beta version of Letterbox that states that it s updated for 10.6.2 but I have not tried it yet.

A quite disconcerting window popped up after installation on my 2.8 GHz '08 iMac.

"Incompatible Software" a window said. The Details button only directed me to an Apple site that listed "restricted" software. Other than Parallels Desktop and Norton Antivirus, I had never heard of any of them. Has anything else been "restricted".

So now I carefully enter 10.6.2? Quark works. So does CS4. Everything fine so far.

My system won't get my mail from my .Mac account, which is an IMAP account. I just upgraded and lost the account's ability to be used on Mail. I logged into my .Mac account and found numerous e-mails waiting for me. This is not good at all.

I used the Combo update after the usual cleanup job on the boot volume. All went well, EXCEPT: I got some flaky stuff happening, particularly in Safari, which required Force Quitting a number of times after going into Sit & Spin mode.

Solution: Restart the OS one more time. The flakes went away.

The Biggest Let Down: The Finder is still WORTHLESS at Networking via WebDAV or FTP.

1) The PITA iDisk / WebDAV bug in 10.6.x is still there! I keep a large array of files in my 'Public' folder. To have the Finder entirely screw up the works and tell me such absurdities as there being '0 items' in a folder full of files is NOT ACCEPTABLE. Having the Finder go into Sit & Spin Mode while I'm working on my iDisk is NOT ACCEPTABLE.

2) FTP from hell: Apple can't seem to get FTP right, either in its own firewall or still, nearly a decade into Mac OS X, in the Finder. Anonymous FTP, account FTP, it doesn't matter. It's guaranteed to screw up in the Finder. Hate emanates from me thinking about the wasted time I've spent trying to work around these eternal Apple FTP from hell problems. "Server connection interrupted...." Bad show Apple.

So much for curing the Finder's ills with the Cocoa rewrite.

Worked fine for me. Every time I see someone complaining about an update not working, when you finally track down the problem it's always the same thing: "Well I just HAD to have this program installed that was written by some guy with a name like Songeyong Jooeypop that turns the menu bar into a dragon and makes the trash can spit fire when you empty it and makes the computer fart every half hour. How did I know that would screw everything up??? Derrrrrrrrrrrrr."

The delete messages sound in Mail disappeared, even after switching the System Preferences > Sound > Sound Effects setting to Line Out from Internal Speakers and rebooting.

Minor annoyance.

A few different problems:
* My volume has jumped to the 1/2 way point on its own several times - usually after a restart
* Safari has locked up a few times
* Problems with Java in Safari ... especially using GoToMyPC.com
* System went to sleep and would not wake up twice

When I select iPhoto or my folder structure as a Pictures folder in the screensaver, the screensaver stalls with 80% CPU usage (blowers spinning up) never displaying any pictures. Before updating 10.6.2 it worked fine. I have a large photo library but that wasn't a problem before updating to 10.6.2.

Found a temporary workaround:

Replace the "Pictures Folder" screensaver binary with the one from 10.6.1.

Location:

"/System/Library/Frameworks/ScreenSaver.framework/Versions/A/Resources/Pictures Folder.saver/Contents/MacOS/Pictures Folder"

Since I downloaded the 10.6.2 update 2 days ago my Display looks like it is thinking I have a 15" Display.
I tried the following:
1) In System Preferences I selected " detect displays".
2) Re-downloaded 10.6.2
Nothing change.

When will this be corrected?

Blue Screen still shows up at shut down. Shutting down became a all blue screen and then a Spinning ball why shutting down. Also the spinning when I open some menu items it dose the same thing.

I am seeing that the folks with No Sound after the update are reporting having their systems default after restart to a third party audio installation that they had previously installed, such as SoundFlower. This may be incompatibility issues with these older 3rd party items, not issues with Mac OS X.

I have been having kernel panics after installing the new Snow Leopard update. Doesn't happen when I am working on the computer. I leave it and after several minutes the panic message appears telling me to hold in the power button and then restart. Never happened until the update. Don't have a clue as to what to do. Help! Thanks

The sound was reset to a Bluetooth headset I used once. When I set it to Line Out....it sounded horrible. I've tried every EQ preset in iTunes and even my custom...all sound horrible. Nothing changed with my hardware, Crown amp, Hafler M5 Reference nearfield monitors. They sound like a transistor radio...if you're old enough to remember those. Trying the trusty Combo Updater.

I updated two computers and now have CONNECTION FAILED problems on both. I ran cocktail diags and still both are having the error all the time. The error screen pops up over and over and over, on top of all other screens. My solution has been to get a second monitor, connect it, and use it since anything on the main monitor is screwed up with the constant error message. You click OK to make the error message go away, and it comes right back. I am trying the combo updater now to see if it will fix it.

MacBook Unibody 13": Lost date/time (clock) settings (a warning pops up saying that the machine has a very old date/time). Also, lost connection to wifi. After setting connection to my home wifi, it update date/time from internet and everything seems to be fine now. Not confident. I might have a bad clock battery? Will disable wifi, shutdown, remove macbook battery, wait for a while, place battery back and reboot to see what happens. Not nice.

I have exactly the same problem as rsucre, it has also happened once or twice before. I lost clock and date but i still had the internet - checked for current date and time, set and then the internet cut out. It's a brand new MacBook - if is there something wrong with the with a component is it worth a trip up the road to the genius bar to take advantage of my apple care?
