Snow Leopard 10.6.2: Unable to receive POP messages

Some users may experience an issue with their POP accounts after upgrading to Snow Leopard. When attempting to retrieve messages in Mail after updating it is possible that messages may no longer download. The 10.6.2 update to Snow Leopard has altered the process for authenticating POP accounts. Mail will only attempt to download messages using your selected authentication method, instead of attempting each method (as was the case in previous versions of Mac OS X).

Essentially what this means is that if you do not select the proper authentication for your incoming POP messages, you will not be able to receive your mail. To change the authentication options in Mail, follow these directions:

  1. Open Mail and navigate to the Mail menu bar > Preferences (or Command + ,).
  2. Choose Accounts and select the POP account that is not receiving messages from the left side of the window.
  3. From the right side of the window, click the Advanced button.
  4. From the drop down menu, select the proper authentication setup. Try Password, or Authenticated POP (APOP) first if you are not sure which option to choose. If you continue to have this problem, contact your ISP or mail provider for assistance.

The big problem is with Mail forgetting passwords. Is this a different problem where Mail keeps the password and won't download mail from the server? Or is this just a restating of the problem of Mail forgetting passwords without coming right out and saying it?

This is actually not a password issue. We have reported on how to resolve password issues in Mail previously though. This issue is in regards to the POP authentication settings in Mail (how it tells your server that you have access).

Started this evening, I'm unable to retrieve my mac mails - these are IMAP, not POP. The Mail programme keeps searching then displays a warning triangle as unable to retrieve the mail. I've tried using webmail at me.com and am presented with an auth.me.com message - if the page will load at all. I tried using a PC via Firefox and it loaded first time but with old mails, I tried again with my wife's me.com address and it wouldn't even load the page. I've seen a few reports of this behaviour on google - so what's happening Apple - where's my Mail!!! I updated both our iMacs to 10.6.2 this morning but my PB is still on 10.5 with the latest security update. Very frustrated!!! Any bright ideas welcome

"If you continue to have this problem, contact your ISP or mail provider for assistance."
Wait aq moment: Apple changed its OS (10.6.1 to 10.6.2) and now Mail isn't working, and we all have to call our ISP???
You call this help?
I call this an answer like: "well, you can always change some settings and see if it works then, as we have no clue either..."
Just write nothing if you don't know the answer.

This is help. Please read the article ... Previous to this update, the way Mail worked was to start with the choice of authentication you chose for POP and if it didn't work, it would try the rest. Now, it does not try the rest. So, you must choose the proper one. If you do not know the proper setting, contact your ISP.

It's all right there.

MacFixIt Joe, you can't be serious here! There is more going on here than you think.
I have this problem, I have 2 e-mail addresses Both POP both the same ISP and all and both didn't work.
Now one started working all on it's own and the other will not work at all with me changing nothing.
ISP says my settings are correct.
Why did they both not work at first and now "Magically" why does one work and one not with out making ANY changes!

Apples advice sounds like a page out of a Microsoft Manual!
Sorry, but it's apparently ALL NOT THERE!

halknmac, the issue is apparently with MobileMe mail, both using a desktop application and webmail. Doesn't look like it has anything to do with the 10.6.2 update. The MobileMe system status page gives a little information:

I should have said that the current MobileMe system issues seem to be in addition to any problem caused by the 10.6.2 update. Unfortunately, they're both occurring at the same time.

MobileMe was indeed down for a short time today (unrelated to this issue however) but it appears to be restored for most users (though the status page hasn't updated recently).

Still down for me, so it's accurate.
I can't get MM on my iPhone or Mail on the desktop.

Mine is also still down. Desktop, Webmail and iPhone. Seems like a fairly major outage.

Still I think it's strange that we are encouraged to contact our ISP: just imagine how often they get a phone call when ever we call our ISP when MobileMe, Yahoo! or anything else is down.

Seems that it is recovering though.

I really don't think that you read the article carefully! Mail will no longer try the other authentication options in the instance where YOU, the user, did not select the proper method needed by your email supplier. In other words, it used to ignore when YOU set up your email account incorrectly in Mail. If you don't know the correct settings, then you need to contact the service provider of your email, which is NOT necessarily your ISP, as they dictate which authentication method they use. If you use Yahoo mail, contact them, etc.. Any email provider I've used has all the parameters necessary listed on their support or help page.

So, to further clarify this ... because there are two things happening.

1. The article is highlighting a software "issue" in Mac OS X 10.6.2. The update changes how Mail treats the POP authentication process. You would still call your ISP -OR- Mail Provider (if your mail is via Comcast (which is also your ISP) call them. But, if you have Yahoo! Mail contact Yahoo! support) if you are not receiving your POP messages. See the difference? The theory is that if you have attempted all the different ways of authenticating your POP account and you are still not receiving messages, you may be having an issue with your ISP or Mail Provider. For further assistance, you should contact them.

2. The commenting on this thread brought up today's issue with MobileMe. This is specific to MobileMe and has nothing to do with this article's premise. You can continue to check the MobileMe status page (or just refresh you mail account) to see when the issue clears up.

BTW, I think you should change the title of this thread to MobileMe email down...
Just my 2¢

Some REAL Help If your settings are correct and it still doesn't seem to work......

I had this problem.
I have 2 e-mail addresses Both POP both the same ISP and all and both didn't work.
Now one started working all on it's own and the other will not work at all with me changing nothing.
ISP says all my settings are correct.

I got the other one to work by:
Open Mail and navigate to the Mail menu bar > Preferences (or Command + ,).
Choose Accounts and select the POP account that is not receiving messages from the left side of the window.
From the right side of the window, click the Advanced button.
From the drop down menu, select the INCORRECT authentication setup. (I changed the port #, unchecked SSL(I require it), and the authentication to something other than what it should be.)
Saved these settings and quit the Mail application, reopened it and reset the correct authentication and port # and rechecked SSL (as I require it to be checked).
It still didn't work until I quit the Mail application again and reopened it.

Apples advice sounds like a page out of a Microsoft Manual!

Since 10.6.2, I have a similar 'mail' problem using Entourage (not Apple Mail). Entourage no longer knows the passwords to my POP accounts, and puts up a dialog box asking me to enter them. The passwords are in my Keychain, of course. I tried deleting the entries in the Keychain, re-entered them with Entourage. That lets Entourage successfully log on to the POP servers. But the next time I run Entourage, it can't retreive the passwords.

Bottom line - I have to manually enter the passwords every time I launch Entourage.

At first I thought it was a new bug in Office 12.2.3, but after seeing this thread, it would seem to be a 10.6.2 bug. Or a combination of the two.

I am having a similar problem after updating Leopard a few days ago. I installed latest updates for Apple (2009-006), Office (12.2.3) & Safari (4.0.4). After that there were keychain problems, lost Address Book entries, & Mail folder in user library disappeared. I had TechTool's files recovery On prior to all of this, but it didn't find all the missing Mail files - I suspect they were overwritten by one of these updates. Had to do their disk scan instead and the Mail files it did find (all but Sync) were in red (maybe not whole or intact file) and many creation dates were changed to 1980 including the messages. I tried using the mbox files from this recovery in a reconstructed Mail library file but this didn't work. Tried Importing them and they show in Mail, but all blanked subject, to/from & content.

Bottom line is I can't tell which update caused all this, so won't do any of these updates on my other laptop until this is clear. I've never had any trouble with Apple's updates before in a decade+ with them, so am highly suspicious of the Office update.

I just upgraded to 10.6.2 and had to adjust my email account setting to be able to receive POP email. I called Comcast, my email provider, and discovered that we had to change the settings for OUTGOING email in order to RECEIVE email. My incoming mail settings were already correct and when we corrected the outgoing settings everything started to work. (This was in spite of the fact that my outgoing email was working just fine.)

The outgoing settings are reached through the "account information" tab on the account setting preferences in Mail. I had to modify my account description on that page, to mail.comcast.net. Then, to set the port and SSL settings I had to click the drop-down for the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) and select "Edit SMTP Server List". Then, you can select the correct server and click the "Advanced" button to display the buttons and drop-downs for the port, SSL and Authentication. Here in Gaithersburg, MD, the correct settings were to use custom port 587, leave Use SSL unchecked and select Password authentication. I don't know whether those settings are valid nationally for Comcast.

The correct incoming settings were port 110, no SSL and Password authentication.
