Safari 4.0.4 available; Firefox 3.6 beta 2 released

Apple has released a small update to Safari today, which improves javascript performance and searching through history files. It also addresses some plugin incompatibility that may have cropped up for some people, especially after the 10.6.2 update. On the Firefox front, Mozilla's latest browser was released a few days ago (version 3.5.5), but they're also actively updating the next version and today have released version 3.6 beta 2.

Safari 4.0.4 should be available through Software Update (36.2MB--requires a restart), so check there first for convenience. If you would like the standalone installer it is available for download at the Safari website: http://www.apple.com/safari/

Firefox 3.5.5 is available from the Firefox website but the beta can be found here: Information, Download

Remember that the beta version of Firefox is a test build that has been released for development purposes. The software is not meant to be used for mainstream uses, but if you would like to check out the latest features you can install the beta along with the latest stable release. Unfortunately, as with all versions of Firefox you cannot run both versions of Firefox at the same time (which would be nice for testing purposes).

Download away, and happy browsing!

Does it FIX the incompatibility between Safari and flash videos?

I am on Safari 3.1.2 and OSX 10.5.6, and it crashes randomly when I access news video. Just now, it was one I was watching, paused it, switched to another tab to look at the second video, and it 'quit unexpectedly' instead of playing. This week-end CNN / Safari had installed Flash Player 10.0 r32 to allow me to watch one of their videos.

Safari 3.xx also crashed randomly. I used to think it was due to the OS, which was 10.3.9. Since going over to 10.4.11 and updating to Safari 4.xx in the stride, I can't remember it has quit on me one single time.

The keyboard shortcut for Topsites has changed from Cmd + Shift + 1 to be Cmd + Alt + 1 with Safari 4.0.4 (and OS 10.6.2 - updated both at the same time so can't be quite sure which changed it).

It's still command-shift-1 for me...not sure what's going on with your system.

It changed to Command-Option-1 when I upgraded to Safari 4.0.4. I was already on OS 10.6.2. Curious as to why they changed it. I use that shortcut all the time and CMD-OPT-1 is very awkward to do one-handed. But, with the newer keyboard it's easier to just lay your thumb across the OPT-CMD keys.

Oh hah! I installed 4.0.4 on my desktop and "tested" this on my laptop, which was running 4.0.3...yeah, not sure why they switched up the shortcut, but it would be nice if they would mention this in the release notes.

Ah, still a version for us Tiger users - maybe the last though!

First of all, I'd rather go back to paying for MacFixIt. It takes CNET to really screw up a great and useful tool that was easy to navigate and not chock full of ads. Okay, enough on that for now. Grrr.

On to Safari 4.0.4: Evernote and 1Password don't play together well. I add them to the tool bar and one launch they are both there, next launch one is missing. Videobox and Web Snapper do the same. Every time I launch Safari, it's always a surprise to see where these add-on buttons will be in the Toolbar and, which of them "won't" be there at all.

Also, the Toolbar decides to Hide and Show all on it's own and I can't get it to stay on "Show" all the time.
