Video: Ford's SmartGauge in motion

by Antuan Goodwin

Ford's SmartGauge system is set to debut on the 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid. We've seen what it looks like and what it can do. I have to say that the SmartGauge looks great in pictures, but it looks so much better in motion.

I wonder how much of this will translate directly into production. The interface is slick, but the "efficiency leaves" feature seems sort of gimmicky, where a simple mpg readout would suffice.

I LIKE the leaves, it is a signifcantly more "emotional" connection to the benefits of driving efficiently. Perhaps if they even turn brown as you drive above 70mph then the visual impact would be even more significant! "Geez I'm killing the tree, I gotta slow down here!" The little tree could save lives and gas!

I like the leaves too; you don't need to stare right at them or focus on a displayed number to see if you're driving efficiently (the only drawback of the nifty Scangauge, which comes with a warning not to let it distract you from driving). You can see the number (and color...) of leaves out of the corner of your eye in your peripheral vision.
