All these electric cars do is relocate the pollution from the tailpipe to the power plant. In the real world, unless your electric power is generated by a nuclear power plant, the pollution generated by a vehicle is less than the pollution generated by a coal fired power plant generating the electricity to charge the super-duper new all electric car car.; Reply to this comment


by quibbs November 22, 2008 10:50 AM PST: It is easier to work on cleaning the releases at hundreds of power plants than controlling the emissions from tens of millions of cars. There could come a day when solar power plants help contribute to our nations power consumption, and that in turn would help reduce emissions further. If solar also comes down in price, or should I say,as it comes down in price, charging cars becomes even cleaner.; Reply to this comment

So boring.

A) Internal combustion engine is extremely inefficient compared to a power plant in fossil fuels burned vs. energy output.

B) You can charge tens of millions of electric cars at night in the US when drain on the grid is lowest without having to burn any additional fossil fuels or build additional power plants in this country. Why? Because the amount of energy produced 24 hours a day for the grid is based on it heaviest usage during the day between 9am ? 6pm. Ever notice that amount charged by electric companies goes down at night? The amount of electricity produced at night isn't slowed down or stored until the following day. Use it or loose it. I realize you don?t get these lessons listening to Rush Limbaugh, but that?s how electricity production works.

So no, sorry, electric cars are not just about "feeling good about yourself". They represent a giant leap in the reduction of fossil fuel and greenhouse gases.; Reply to this comment
