Chrysler: America's Bimmer, Benz?

by Antuan Goodwin

DETROIT -- If Chrysler LLC can survive its financial crisis, it will emerge as a boutique enterprise along the lines of Germany's premium carmakers, co-President Jim Press said in an interview last week.

He suggested that Chrysler could show the way to a sustainable model for a smaller U.S. auto industry.

"If there's one company in America that can build high-craftsmanship, innovative vehicles, it's Chrysler," Press said.

Chrysler will build vehicles that have premium features but are affordable to consumers. Press said the 2009 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup signals the company's direction.

"If Mercedes-Benz built a pickup truck, that's what it would be," said Press, who came to Chrysler in 2007 after three decades with Toyota.

He said Chrysler is making premium vehicles from the ground up, while "GM and Ford are making basic cars and 'gingerbreading' them up to premium."

Press said he saw a prototype of the next-generation Jeep Grand Cherokee, due in 2010. He said it had the most rigid body and best suspension of any vehicle he has seen.

"We're going to be a smaller, more focused company," Press said. "We could be the Mercedes or BMW of America."

The company already has swallowed some tough medicine, Press said, slashing production, closing plants, laying off 32,000 workers and cutting unprofitable models. The plan was working until the credit crisis hit last summer, he said.

Press said Chrysler's next generation of vehicles will demonstrate "what America could become if we could buy the time."

Chrysler is working hard to become a quality company with excellent products again. I'm a member of the CAB Chryslers customer advisory board. I can see 1st hand that Chrysler is making the right decisions and listening to what customers want. What Chrysler needs right now is SUPPORT in the way of auto sales, so they can get to that point. You will se a stronger Chrysler with world class products if they can find a path through this financial mess. Buy a Chrysler vehicle today.

Chrysler has already received enough of my money involuntarily. Even if they hadn't, with their chronic transmission troubles, there was no reason to purchase from them in the past. I will never be purchasing a vehicle from them. It was a bad idea to bail them out in 1979 -- bailling them out in 2009 is just throwing more good money after bad.

American made automobiles have had an unfavorable reputation compared to foreign makes. This reputation developed over many years and cannot be fixed overnight. However, there have been a few instances where American cars performed marginally well. But to think that the Chrysler company could design a vehicle that would compare to a German make is rediculous. German engineering cannot be replicated. If so, they should have been smart enough to do this years ago. If Chrysler is to succeed, that is, if they get through this finanancial mess, which I doubt, then they should simply come up with a quality product that copies no other models. They should think out of the box and for God's sake make an automobile that is truly fuel efficient.

America's BMW or Mercedes-Benz huh? Well they have a LOT of work to do if they are going to transform the Chrysler Sebring into a 3-Series fighter. I've been in a new Sebring and never have I experienced interior materials that looked and felt so cheap. Same with my friend's Dodge Durango and my old company's '06 Grand Cherokee. Chrysler products are regularly ranked in the bottom half of reliability rankings. I honestly can't name one Dodge or Chrysler I would seriously consider purchasing. The Jeep Wrangler is the only vehicle worth salvaging from this company.

The fact that they went out and hired Bob Nardelli, the guy who ran Home Depot into the ground and then split with one of the largest golden parachutes in history gives me no confidence. If they really wanted to turn things around, they should have hired a CEO with a history of competence. The government should have left Chrysler out in the cold during these bailouts. They have the lowest quality product and what appears to be lowest commitment to improving. I think the "loan" money is for Cerebus to buy time for offloading the company. They just don't want to have to dig into their own pocket to keep the company afloat.
