Hummer H3

According to a recent study, this truck is more likely to get a traffic ticket than any other car model.

(Credit: Hummer)

A study by ISO Quality Planning identified the 10 most ticketed vehicles and the 10 least ticketed. The study puts the Hummer H2 and H3 at the top of the list, followed closely by the Scion tC. Actually, two other Scion models, the xB and xA, also make the top 10 list. A couple of Mercedes-Benz AMG models, the CLK63 and CLS63 also make the list, which shouldn't come as a surprise. The 10 least ticketed cars include a healthy dose of minivans and trucks.

Most ticketed     Rate        Least ticketed     Rate
Hummer H2/H3 463% Jaguar XJ 11%
Scion tC 460% Chevrolet Suburban 16%
Scion XB 403% Chevrolet Tahoe 21%
Mercedes Benz CLK63 AMG 397% Chevrolet C/K 3500/2500 pickup 28%
Toyota Solara Coupe 306% Buick Park Avenue 32%
Mercedes Benz CLS63 AMG 276% Mazda6 34%
Scion xA 275% Buick Rainier 37%
Subaru Outback 266% Oldsmobile Silhouette 37%
Audi A4 264% Buick Lucerne 40%
Toyota Matrix 264% GMC Sierra C1500 pickup 40%

*Violations per 100,000 miles driven, expressed as percentage of average.

The study doesn't specify what kinds of traffic tickets, so there's no telling if Hummers are more likely to speed or run red lights, but you could probably make some reasonable guesses. It also seems unfair to lump the H2 and H3 together.

This has little to do with the cars themselves and lots to do with the kinds of people who drive certain kinds of cars. The left hand column is a pretty thorough list of a$$hole cars, while the right hand column is full of little old lady rides. That is to say, if you are the type of arrogant, passive-agressive, me-first yutz who "needs" a Hummer, you probably would be a ticket magnet whether you drive that or your aunt's Crown Vic.

how do you explain the jaguar in the right hand column?
by PolarExplorer January 28, 2009 8:27 PM PST
I don't see too many old ladies driving pickup trucks like the GMC Sierra or Chevrolet 2009
by Shaun822 January 28, 2009 9:14 PM PST
Generally I would agree with that sentiment but in Boston, MA and the surrounding areas all of those trucks and SUV's in the right hand column belong in the same general "attitude" column as the Hummer and the Mercedes, etc.

The H2/H3 lumping doesn't surprise me. Of the people that I know that have them deserve tickets because they are d@@che bag drivers who think the road belongs to them. Of course that's only the people that I know....not sure of the soccer mum who "needs" the hummer for her urban excursions to the grocery store though. Patton Oswald said it best......."You should be able to buy a hummer, just when you buy it, someone hits you in the back of the neck with a roll of f-ing quarters and when you wake up, you're in Iraq. You can buy the hummer, but you need to get the oil for it also" It's a funny bit, that's all.

Ah. An Obama voter. You can tell by the smug self-righteous arrogance and total hatred for SUVs.
by jdukvoac January 29, 2009 10:44 AM PST
@b_baggins - Funny......I own a Jeep Wrangler.....hummm smug self-rightous arrogance? I think not. Do I wish I could convert my Wrangler to be more fuel economical and without emission, all without loosing the performance? Yes. Hatred for SUV's or people who responsibly drive them, no. Hatred for A@#Holes who drive SUV's like they own the road, yes. So, as defensive and smug as you were with your comment, I can only deduct that you must either drive a H2/H3, own an SUV or are some sort of wanna-be SUV owner. And so, if you are, and drive like you own the damned road, then yes, you find yourself in the category of A@#Hole.

And as far as my politics are concerned.....wrong again! (wow, batting a 1000 aren't you?)

Don't quit your day job psychic!

@jdukvoac

I drive a little Saturn SL1, but I don't begrudge anyone who can afford an SUV. Nor have I noticed them to be particularly more annoying a driver than anyone else. But I do recognize self-righteous liberals when I see them. They tend to be the ones who love to call people a$$holes.

Lumping together the H2 and H3 is not as unfair as it may seem at first. The violations are not calculated as an absolute number, but as an average per mile, so multiple models rolled together have no real disadvantage; they average out. In fact, one of the two models, by itself, would register an even higher percentage rate,

Wow... Is that every Scion car? It's a funny thing to think that the Xb is a major offender... Just doesn't seem like a car that a reckless driver would buy. Huh...

Only reason all the scions are there is probably due to so many teenagers or younger people driving them around.
by dragontsd January 29, 2009 4:54 AM PST
Subaru outback is like a middle aged dad car... not too many subaru outbacks in street races on this side of the country. Police profile cars just like they profile people...if it looks fast the driver must be irresponsible... They dont care if you're driving fast/drunk/backwards/upsidedown....they dont care about anything but their quota and all the stuff the municipality can buy with their shiny new fine.

I know plenty of cops, you can argue the point all you like...it's true. cops and politicians...nation's most potent abusers of power....wait....really the only ones with power...imagine that....

From my experience, I think most of the Hummer tickets would be for poor parking.

ZIIIIIIIING.

In all of my six years of driving I've yet to receive any type of ticket beyond parking tickets on my college campus. I drive a Chevrolet Suburban and a Ford Mustang, and I'm not always light on the gas pedal. My theory about speeding is, you gotta be smart about it. Know when to speed and when not to speed. For instance, if its a holiday and you're on Interstate 5 in California, don't speed.lol

The cars themselves have little to do with you getting or not getting a ticket, if anything, the color of your car has more to do with it. If you look at that list most of the cars on the right probably outperform all the other cars on the left except maybe the AMG's and the Audi.

I mean you got the Chevy pickups that pull upwards of 320hp, and let me tell you as heavy as those trucks are, they can really move. I have a buddy with at LTZ with the 6.0liter pushing 367hp and he's had his share of tickets.

And Buicks themselves aren't known for being slow, they're just known for having slower drivers.lol

I'm both surprised and not surprised to see all of the Scion's up there. I'm surprised because Scion doesn't exactly exude performance, it's just a brand of customization for a specific targeted audience mostly looking for flash. You'd just never think one of those cars could get going fast enough to get a ticket.lol

I'm not surprised because I have a few friends who drive Scion's and whenever I ride with them, they're always telling me how good their car is and how the engine in the Scion TC is a special prototype (I'm not sure how accurate this is, I never bothered to look it up.lol). Basically they're wannabe tuners. These are the ones who buy their "performance parts" at autozone and pepboys. I'm not criticizing either store, I get my parts from them too, but when it comes to performance parts like intake manifolds, heads, etc, I'll stick with summit racing or some other specialized company.

As for everyone attacking H2/H3 drivers, get over it, we have ****** drivers in every make and model, it's not just SUV drivers who can be A-holes. I mean, I personally would never buy an H2 because I already own a full size SUV in a Suburban, however, if I had the money right not, I'd jump at an H3 because my truck isn't designed for Off-Road. Also, I have no problem with Hummer drivers around town, it's their purchase to make as they like.

I'd like list of most ticketed colors for cars. I'm going to assume that Red is still #1, but I'd like to see how maroon and blue stand up to other colors. I think there was one up here on CNET a few years back.

"...how good their car is and how the engine in the Scion TC is a special prototype (I'm not sure how accurate this is, I never bothered to look it up.lol). "

Experimental engine in the tC? Well, I guess if you call the Toyota Camry's base 2.4 engine experimental then so be it. But, I don't think they mass-produce 'prototypes'.

LOL well duh on the Scions, what age group drive those the most?

I have to agree with the a$$h0le mentality about who drives those cars. I have valeted for 6 years and seen nothing but jerks and leadfooted soccer moms jump out of H2s, teenagers with wealthy parents driving H3s, 39 year olds driving Scions to try and seem young(also driving wrecklessly to seem young), if you drive any mercedes you think you're above the law naturally(and the CLK63 is freaking amazing but the CL65 AMG is better V12 Bi-Turbo) and the matrix well they're just ugly and deserve a ticket.

I expected the list to be dominated by SUV's and pickups because their boxy profiles are much easier for radar to detect. That's why I drive a sports coupe with a dropped front end, radar bounces over it, and having a very expensive radar detector also helps!

It sucks but where I live and most places I have been cops are ********. Not always but in general its a power attitude. Anyway, the best thing to avoid these problems is to buy a car that doesn't stand out like a sore thumb. Then drive according to the rules of the road and drive defensive as hard as that is. If you drive the speed limit, and come to complete stops at every single stop sign and don't run red lights when it turns yellow you will be in the clear. If you buy a flashy car don't expect sympathies. It screams "I want a nice big ticket!"

I mean seriously. What do any of us have to prove on the road. All it is is a way to get from Point A to Point B. Nothing more and nothing less. Why do we need to look "Cool" or "own the road" or any of that other nonsense? Its no wonder cops act like they do?

It's no accident that the Scion's are on the list. The market for these cars is young people. Older fart's like me like them because they are cheap and cheap on gas. I have two of these cars and can tell you I haven't been pulled over in 25 years until I drove the one my 18 year old drives. I've was pulled over 4 times in the first 4 months of owning the car (no tickets issued). I guess having chrome rims and dvd players in the head rests flags me as problem driver all of a sudden? Considering the XB is the car that has the least power of any car I've ever driven/owned in my life, I'd have to say these kid cars are just targets for cops hassling kids because they assume kids are driving them. If anyone out there were followed around every time you got behind the wheel for any amount of time, the cops could find some violation to pull you over for too. I guess for now the younger set needs to buy the silver/tan sedan and blend until your hair is silver/tan .. Just my two cents.
