Now that its electric roadster is in production, Tesla showed off prototypes of its upcoming electric sedan. The sleek-looking car, which launches in late 2011, should come in at around $50,000, making it half the price of the sports car and able to hold three times as many occupants.

Absolutely beautiful!...but...

...3 years to delivery?! Jeez!

By the time this car ships, I will be able to equip my DeLorean with that Mr. Fusion upgrade.

Certainly a gorgeous car. I see hints of Audi, Aston Martin, Maserati, yet it has a style of it's own. Not some rip-off of other people's design elements in a blender, but a solid coherent impression.
I also like the large monitor and incar Internet, although the interior color is too nondescript and light.

Can someone please explain to me why they felt compelled to put a grill on an all electric drive car?

I believe that its a mandated law at the federal level to have to a have a grill on all "street legal" cars

electric motors and batteries produce plenty of heat during their operation. they gotta be cooled down somehow plus the grille looks good on the car. it would look funny without one.

You would think that someone invent a way to use the moving air through the grill to produce energy to charge the car while in motion.

I just find it weird that they would 'Announce' a car that won't ship until 2011!!
BUT, aside from that, I WANT ONE! WOW!
I'd really love to have an all electric car!

I think it is okay to announce a car that is 2 years away. I am willing to put off buying a new car until the one I really want is in the market in several months. On another note Tesla is the company that should be getting all the media attention instead of failed corporations. Tesla should be getting grants from investors to expand and put more Americans to work. They have a futuristic approach that explores alternative energy source (electricity instead of gas), it is an American innovation and there is a market for their quality product.

Only problem is that the Lithium Ion cells that power the car are manufactured in China. Lithium ion battery development would be a great opportunity for American industry.

I'm curious to see what an all electric truck built by Tesla would be like. Electric Motors have more Torque at low rpm's than a comparable gasoline engine. This is what gives Tesla's First car 3.9 second 0-60 acceleration. Perhaps this property would work well in making a good capable pickup or maybe an SUV. The only problem is that reduce aerodynamics and more weight would reduce the range of the vehicle
