GM to kill 5 models this year

by Automotive News

DETROIT--General Motors said last week that it will stop building the Pontiac G6 GXP sedan and coupe at the end of this model year, as well as the Chevrolet Impala SS and Cobalt SS sedans and the Cadillac STS-V.

Pontiac representative Jim Hopson said Friday that the GXP decision is not related to the phaseout of Pontiac, which GM plans to accomplish by the end of 2010. It stemmed from an earlier decision to pare Pontiac down to a niche brand, he said.

"There is a movement here to reduce the build complexity -- that's the number of trim levels we sell, not the nameplates -- so that was the decision behind taking out the GXP," Hopson said.

He added: "We'll have more information in the weeks to come of exactly when each Pontiac vehicle will go out of production."

At Chevrolet, the Cobalt SS coupe will continue "a while longer--to be determined," said Terry Rhadigan, a Chevrolet representative.

"Demand was pretty light for both models, and so it was a business decision that we made based on the demand," he said.

GM just launched the Cobalt SS sedan in 2008--and quickly discovered no demand for it. "It had a pretty short run," Rhadigan said.

GM does not release sales data on trim levels. Through April, GM sold 32,065 total Cobalts, down from 66,660 in the year-ago period. GM sold 45,047 total Impalas through April, compared with 98,478 a year earlier.

Extra cost, resource-wasting (both in production and in consumer-usage) performance VARIATIONS of standard cars apparently don't sit with Congress and the Administration, particularly when the economy is in a rut and the company is about to fall into bankruptcy.

Now we'll have to see how long the variations for DEDICATED performance cars (Corvette ZR1, Z06) will last...

The G6 is a pretty mediocre car (unlike the far superior G8), so no great loss there. The Cobalt SS Turbo will be a great loss; just about every review i've read loved everything about the car except the low-rent interior. Shame.

Whoops, I thought they were discontinuing the SS Turbo coupe. The SS Sedan? No great loss, IMHO.

Kill off all the dumb gas-guzzlers GM, like all those really awful silverados and stupid hummers. Then you've got yourself a good deal. The car... sorry monster-trucks may sell well, but they are wasteful and too big for normal roads.

You suffer from a typically dumb, shortsighted, tree hugger mentality. The company is trying to save itself and in turn the jobs of thousands of people; killing off product lines that are actually selling, specifically the Silverado, would be suicidal and stupid plus have negligible effect on the environment. It?s tempting to go get a non-hybrid Silverado and drive it thru a forest just to spite people like you.

You just perfectly exemplified why people hold a certain opinion about those making statements like 'tempting to go get a non-hybrid Silverado and drive it thru a forest just to spite people like you.' Perhaps a little less me-me-me and more of a 'what's best for my future, my children's future and this country's long term stability and viability' is required.

The Cobalt and G6 are not gas guzzlers you idiot.

I too agree with Rick. I do believe people have a right to chose a vehicle however people need to think a little more about the impact of their choice. I see too many people driving huge high power trucks to work in an office. What is the point of a vehicle that hardly gets 20 MPG only to drive city streets from a surburban home to a corporate office. This isn't just about "tree hugging." This is about oil dependancy, vehicle safety for others on the road, and modesty. A truck is a utility vehilce and should be used as such. Too many people drive trucks to be safe or appear tough. This doesn't factor in the safety of others in smaller compact cars. This "tough" appearance is one of the reasons we are hated by other countries and push people to attack us. I don't think we should kill all trucks but I do think there needs to be some qualifcation to purchase.

People need trucks, not so much hummers.

I have a really novel idea for America, how about we let individuals decide what they want to drive. They could buy the vehicle they like with THEIR money that they have EARNED. To bad there's not gonna be anything left in a productive person's pocket after washington gets through with it. As a result nobody can afford new cars, Detroit goes bankrupt and we are all supposed to look to washington for our crumbs. Oh boy, oh boy. In a FREE society it immoral for one citizen to be able to tell another citizen what vehicle is "wasteful and too big for normal roads?????????" How many Prius' would it take to haul the load of one Silverado HD? Efficiency?

@ Rick

I'm pretty certain that driving a non-hybrid Silverado through the forest isn't going to affect your future or your children's future. Don't buy into that global warming catastrophe BS that they are feeding you. It is based on an effort to further control and tax you. Don't buy the hype. The planet will still be here fifty years from now, largely unaffected. Then it will be some other environmental hoop we need to jump through to save the planet from certain destruction, like global cooling and the impending ice age.

I find it ironic how Americans today make GM/Chrysler/Ford look evil when at the same time, they bow down and chant how GODLY Toyota/Honda/Nissan etc are, Toyota is the worse offender as they have even WORSE gas-guzzlers then even GM does. Honda makes the Pilot and Ridgeline while Nissan makes the Pathfinder, Armada, QX, FX and Titan. How many Hybrid SUVs/Trucks does Toyota have? just the measly Highlander. Honda? NONE. Nissan? NONE other than the afterthought Hybrid Altima. GM has the Silverado/Sierra Hybrids, Tahoe/Escalade Hybrid, Malibu Hybrid, Vue Hybrid, and countless other vehicles that run on alternative fuels. Now on to QUALITY, how many early 90s, late 80s, early 80s, late 70s Japanese cars do you still see puttering around town without any rust? ZERO, I see GM/Ford/Chrysler vehicles from 30 years ago still puttering around for daily use with minimal rust and in good shape. Even the dreadful K-Cars are still moving today. I can go on but this website is definitely not knowledgeable with Automobiles, and just wanna stick their head, hands and feet up the Japanese ***** and kiss their b***h*** while THEY crank out crapmobiles.
