Today, Jay Leno took the stage in England to introduce the 2010 Jaguar XJ. This model update follows on the successful update of the XK and launch of the XF, completing Jaguar's revamp of its model line-up. In his opening remarks, Leno commented on how it was a Jaguar that first got him into cars, an impressive achievement considering his current car collection.

The new XJ keeps many traditional Jaguar styling cues, such as a wire grille, but its sides come straight down; probably better for aerodynamics, rather than the more torpedo-like shape of older Jags. The roofline also extends back far over the trunk, with small triangular windows behind the main rear side windows. A standard glass top also has two sunroofs, both of which open, for front and rear seats.

Jaguar worked with stereo maker Bowers & Wilkins on the audio systems for the XK and XF, and continues the partnership in the XJ. The stereo for this car uses 1,200 watts of amplification, and includes a media hub with two USB ports for iPods and other sources along with Bluetooth audio streaming.

Instead of traditional analog instruments, the XJ gets a 12.3-inch high-resolution screen for its instrument cluster, with virtual speedometer and tachometer. The center LCD is an 8-inch touch screen for controlling audio, navigation, and the phone system.

The car will be built as a standard XJ and in a long wheelbase model, dubbed the XJL. The base engine for the car is a 5-liter V-8 making 385 horsepower. A supercharged version will also be available with 470 horsepower, and a Supersport model makes 510 horsepower.

The 2010 Jaguar XJ goes on sale in September.

It starts off as one of the most beautiful until you reach the 3/4 of the car which looks like a cross between the GM EV1 and the Lincoln MKS. It's like Halle Berry with a flat butt.

Does anyone notice how in EVERY Jag official pic or video that they obscure the rear of the B-pillars? It is like a really fat girl tryin' to hide her as* in every picture. In other words, I think this is because the marketing people are worried that people will prejudge the rather...umm...ridiculous piano black applique to the B-pillars and they would prefer you just see it in person. So far on avery car website I've been on the shot of the rearB-Pillars has been magically obscured (with glow, blur, and other photoshop tricks). I will not judge this car before seeing it in person, but it appears the that the marketing people are either awfully scared or awfully ashamed of this quite unorthodox design treatment...or am I just crazy?!

oh maann...

this is what happens when we Americans try to do something that we are not good at. we're good at acquiring companies, but we are horrible at designing cars that are utterly beautiful.

plain and simple. give us credit for the systems to mass produce cars, but...*ahem* we can not design. i mean look, our innovative idea moved us to put wood paneling on the side of a car...what about wood says-sleek & modern? when we thought we were gonna take this industry back from the foreign makers...our weapon? the PT cruiser...WHAT?!

*shakes head* this car looks like a buick & caddy crossover...this is just horrible. we took a perfectly great name and car...then destroyed it!

stick to what you know...acquisitions.

I own a Jaguar X-Type designed by Jaguar with the backing by Ford Motor Company . When Ford Took over Jaguar they redesigned and added the S-Type and X-type based on the rich history of Jaguar design. They also brought Jaguar to become one of the most reliable luxury cars on the JD Power lists. My X-Type has a Ford engine and Japanese designed all-wheel drive system with Service second to none. Ford has since Sold there controlling interest in Jaguar and Range Rover to an Indian based company. Ford, unlike GM ( who destroyed Saab) and Chrysler... let the people from Coventry, England continue to design and build Jags with pride. Also, Ford still owns Volvo... which is thriving in design and thier rich tradition.

If you really had a good look at this Automobile you would see how classy it is and how it will Bury the BMW 7 and the Mercedes S class in the dirt your talking about. The problem for you Sir is you are living in the past and can't appreciate or afford this class of vehicle.. Look in the mirror my son and ask yourself truly, if you had the funds would you purchase the new XJ and you answer would be yes I'm am sure!
Don't feel bad, but don't be frowning on the fine work that Ian Callum and his team have done for Jaguar in all the new models. The XK, XF and the XJ.
These Automobiles are stunning and Sir Ian Callum of Scotland should be Knighted for his work put into saving this beautiful company.
And Mr. Tata thank you for your vision in the purchase of Jaguar and Land Rover. It will be the automotive story of the Century Im sure.
Thank you Gentlemen........Yours Very Truly and with Most Respect, Jeff McCargar, Woodbridge (north of Toronto() Ontario, Canada.
P.S. I am going to order the New XJ from Coventry North Jaguar in Woodbridge after the roll out here in October.........All The Best Gentlemen.

what are you talking about ?? This is one of the most beautiful cars ever designed. If only ford had come up w. a design like before they sold the jaguar name brand.
I wouldnt buy this car only because its now an Indian name brand...

How many brands are really made in the registered countries? Indian name brand indeed!! Unfortunate for TATA that too many people think in the same lines out here in the Middle East.

Sub-quality chinese and taiwanese products are okay .. but not an Indian Brand.... Maybe I shouldn't buy that Ford Car afterall
by wspnokc July 13, 2009 12:52 PM PDT
Fact is, this car was completely engineered under the Ford umbrella, PAG. Many details were refined, but the basic car has stayed much the same.
I agree that it was very sad to see Ford in such a position to need to sell a car company in the midst of such a dramatic and brilliant reawakening.

So many morons, so little time to respond to each one so here goes for 1 and all...
Jaguar is NOT an Indian name brand nor was it ever a Ford name brand. As every Jaguar in the past, this is an extremely gorgeous vehicle. Just wait until you see it in person. For those who say they now do not want a new Jaguar probably cannot afford one. All of the negativity is by dreamers....keep dreaming and the day you can afford a vehicle of this caliber will be the day you will say "this is one awesom vehicle". Keep em coming Ian, great job!

Hideous...absolutely sacrilege...way to destroy an iconic car brand, Jaguar had a classic, iconic look, this is a generic looking piece of sh*t...oh well, I guess I no longer want a new Jag...

Are you kidding me?! This iconic company has returned to its deep roots of innovative design balanced with British oppulance.
Out with the dying breed and into the next generation. Hopefully Jaguar will never fall flat on its a** again.
by ddmtrackstar July 12, 2009 4:06 PM PDT
First- "Bigdaddyjd" is your username... Enough said
Second- Jaguar's classic looks got them nowhere. Before their designs got changed they were the joke of the "luxury" car industry. This car shares much styling with classic Jaguars and it is improved by its changes. Jaguar needed to become modern and it did. While still having incredibly gorgeous cars.

Not to offend anyone but I would never buy a car that was designed and engineered by an Indian company! There's German Engineering, American Engineering & Japanese Engineering the in the auto industry but who's really heard of Indian Auto Engineering?!! LoL! Oh yeah, they ripped Audi's LED Daytime running lights! What a cheap company!

I dont really see any India Design here. I am Indian, but I know what the folks out here would do. TATA hasn't yet interfered in the design parts.

I havent yet really seen any full Indian designed cars. All are models from abroad. The one all Indian Car is probably the ambasador - the ugliest car in the world
by wspnokc July 13, 2009 1:01 PM PDT
Do your homework ULTsx. This car was engineered by Brits and funded by an American icon. Do you really think Tata had time to engineer a car like this in 17 months? haha
Tata's unlimited resources will thankfully keep this sensual cat pouncing for decades to come. And British!
by BenFlavoredCandy July 14, 2009 7:36 AM PDT
Besides the fact that this car was engineered by Brits, have you ever been to a top-tier engineering school? Half the students there are from India. I would be happy to have these very intelligent people design my car.
by 56-78 August 28, 2009 2:45 PM PDT
Im a white guy from Canada and remember not so long ago we would think that Japanese, German and even recently Chinese engineering was something to laugh at. Remember?
ULTsx you are either too young or too immature to understand how things evolve. You should embrace, enjoy and welcome our brothers and sisters engineering from all over the world and realize that with YOUR kind of thinking (or non-thinking) you put yourself in the same pot as the Big Three Auto Manufactures in North America.
If they make it through this financial crisis it will be a miracle.
You my friend will be left behind just like them.
I have purchased software and many other products and services from my Indian brothers and find their work and products and engineering Top Notch.
Get with the world buddy and put you negative thoughts behind you before we loose you with the Big three who are now the real sad sack story in the automotive business.......Best Wishes.......The Phantom

Unlike the XK, the 2010 XJ does not look better in person. The exterior is truly a Jaguar design failure. Too bad. These cars had a classical beauty which is now lost. The XJ is now another fat ugly BMW 750, without the quality engineering or the BMW service program to back it up. Ford dumped this albatross in the nick of time.

I am British and I am amazed at the American people on here saying that this car is ugly!
WHEN was the last time an American car looked this good!? This car has flare and style and poise and subtlety. All of which cannot be found in anything but a European car.
Just thank goodness that you won't be getting the 3.0l diesel engine that we will be stuck with in England.

I just wanted to say how sad I am to see this beautiful car transformed. Everything on the road looks the same, and now, this does too. It too closely resembles the new XF (which is a beauty), and to me, the rear reminds me of a Lexus. I have always loved Jaguars...not thrilled with the back of the 2009 model; too bulky, but, still, looks sweet on the road. This is a simply elegant car, and now, although very beautiful, looks nothing like its former self. I was so upset when they took the "leaper" off the hood...the first stripping of its honor. The modern jaguar figure on the rear end looks cartoonish, not tasteful nor elegant. The car is still being made in England, but I guess we will have to wait out the response. I feel in my gut, there is no turning back.

I am Canadian and I agree with you Sir, the whiners should go back to their little lives because they don't appreciate a real automobile when they see it.
They have nothing else in their lives to do but *****!
This XJ along with the XK and XF are among the very finest cars in their class and the Germans and the Japanese have nothing even close........The Phantom
