Garmin Nuvi 205W simple, yet effective

by Antuan Goodwin

"Simple, yet effective" is probably the best way to describe Garmin's entry-level Nuvi 205W GPS device. This unit doesn't pack a lot of bells and whistles and focuses on getting the basics right, delivering a user experience that's easy for your chronically lost grandma to use.

The standout feature in this new model is a new "Where am I?" option that can come in handy during an emergency. But mostly, the 205W represents a significant performance boost over the older Nuvi 200 models.

The 205W is aimed at users who want the benefit of a big, responsive touch screen, but don't want to break the bank. Techies should go elsewhere for more full feature sets, perhaps looking further up Garmin's line or at competing TomTom models.

Check out the full review of the Garmin Nuvi 205W GPS navigator.

I've had it for MONTHS... do I understand it is 'just now' getting reviewed?

Pros - works flawlessly! I've been all over the northwest and it routes me where I wanna go.

Cons - if you didn't by it for Canada, you better purchase the Canadian Maps or expect to be miffed. Recently we drove across the border (to the north). It had the main roads, but they appeared to be INTENTIONALLY mis-aligned. Yes, intentionally. The roads that had been in place since the definition of dirt - appear to be intentionally shifted east, west, north or south. As soon as you cross the boarder - you start driving in the dirt (and the map shows the road with you a hundred or more yards off to the side of it).

Other than the cross border frustration - this thing works!

Congratulations on your purchase.

Actually, I'm surprised that the 205W has ANY Canadian roads, as the unit is only sold with regional maps at this level and is only advertised to contain maps for the lower 48 states, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico. Higher level Nuvis contain non-regional maps, but at this price point, I'd consider any Canadian data a bonus, not a con.

The Nuvi 205W works reasonably well and it's satellite lock and processor speed are much improved over the old C330 unit. Otherwise, Gramin has moved in the wrong direction in many ways. The maps are totally out of date, the user interface isn't as nice as in the C330 and so forth. Given the keen price point ($150 including tax) this is still a reasonable unit but Garmin should really invest in product development...
