Bullitt (1968)

Every car guy should know what movie this still is taken from.

For as long as there have been cars, people have been chasing each other around in them. Between the roar of an engine, the occasional crunching of metal, and the pumping adrenaline, there's something primal about a good car chase that just gets us going.

Unfortunately, local laws, limited funds, and a general concern for our own safety mean that we can't just go out and crunch up cars everyday. This is where Hollywood comes in, filling our favorite movies with over-the-top car chases that allow us to live vicariously through the celluloid and experience the thrill of the chase from the comfort of our couches.

Check out our chronological list of the 25 best movie car chases that every car lover and wannabe action hero should see. When you're done, let us know your favorite movie car chase in the comments below.

Speed racer????? one of my favorites if not the best car chases to me is the one on matrix reloaded. I love all the special effects all the cammera zomming and panning. Also a good movie with a car chase is The Island, it happen after some peoples clones escape from the lab they were created.

Thank you for including Speed Racer, which to me is THE most criminally underrated movie of the last decade. The car chases are fantastically and WONDERFULLY over-the-top, but epic fun nonetheless. Also mad props for including the chase in Matrix Reloaded, but the better Indiana Jones choice is the one in the first, the best, the original Raiders of the Lost Ark. It took millions more dollars and state-of-the-art special effects for the chase in the Matrix Reloaded to top the low-tech brilliance of the chase after the Ark in Raiders!

Just a correction note for CNET: The car chase scene with the Mini in Bourne Identity took place in Paris, not Zurich!

You gotta love the Blues Brothers chases! John Candy's line "We're in a truck" a true classic!!!

Call me crazy but, I loved the chase scene in the Rock. Granted it was Michael Bay throwing any hip vehicle down the streets of San Francisco, but Hummer, and Lamborghinis flying through the air was pretty sweet!

I hated Speed Racer! Sure it was visually stunning, but it stank!
The only reason to watch it is to calibrate your new HDTV, or if yo ulike Christina Ricci.

Speed Racer is one of those movies that you either really love or freaking hate. Personally, I think that's one of the hallmarks of a good movie. Instead of trying to moderately amuse everyone with mediocrity, a really good movie takes chances and throws caution to the wind and hones in on a particular audience. Remember, many of the movies that we refer to as "cult classics" were initially met with negative reactions by the general movie-going public.

Where is "The GumBall Rally"? the whole movie was a coast to coast car chase. I don't aggree with most of the bottom 10. There are pleanty of great chases that were missed and are better than the bottom 10.

I second that. If you haven't seen The Seven-Ups car chase, then you missed one of the best.

Get rid of Speed Racer. That wasn't a car chase, it was a pinball game.

"To Live and Die in L.A." should have been #2 after Bullitt. http://www.popularmechanics.com/automotive/new_cars/4270411.html?page=4

Totally agree that the LA freeway chase scene in "To Live and Die in L.A." is one of the greatest in film history!

Any film that includes CGI should be excluded! Another film that should be on this list is Race With the Devil.

Commendable effort, but you forgot the Best Car Chase in the entire history of movies: the Seven Ups (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0070672/) with Roy Scheider.

The movie is average but in the middle, you are treated with an unexpected car chase which turns out to be extraordinarily intense, conveys the sense of speed better than most, and ends in a way that leaves you with your eyes wide open, your hands gripping the armchair and your heart beating a little faster.

ok. I think you are totally wrong about gone in 60 seconds the first one was horrible and the car was a POS lets face it. It looked like they had a 200 dollar budget on the car and said lets get the ugliest mustang and feature that is a pee yellow paint and say its wicked cool. Hate to break it to you it was't the remake was awsome they thought it through and said lets build 150,000 dollar cars and make them bad a.. and it was, as far as my opinion goes how about terminator 2 with the car and truck and motorcycle chase, how about the remake of the italian job that was cool that they stayed with the minis, how about the remake of death race cool cars and criminals, the new fast and furious was pretty cool chacing the truck with fuel. There is so many more I just can't think of right now but I will agree with about 80% of the list and also how about trucks that was good

Terminator 2 should have made the list. The wrecker chasing the motorcycle, the helicopter chasing the SWAT van and the little Chevy S-10 truck being chased by a tanker full of liquid nitrogen....GREAT!! Road Warrior was not only a far better movie than Mad Max, it had a MUCH better chase scene as well and should have made the list.

I absolutely agree with standto about "To Live and Die in L.A." It is just about the greatest chase scene ever filmed, and looks absolutely real and dangerous. Plus it has the added benefit of being essential to the plot, not something that is bolted onto the story. Also love the mentions of "The Seven-Ups" and "Race With the Devil."

Director William Friedkin pulled off another great chase in "Jade," which is otherwise pretty terrible.

Three more honorable mentions: Spielberg's "The Sugarland Express," Monte Hellman's "Two-Lane Blacktop," and Sam Peckinpah's "Convoy."

Some great movies in the article and the comments. I agree with svgtom's comment about excluding CGI chases.

Another movie with great car chases that should be included is "The Junkman" (1982).
