Accord Crosstour

Has Honda created an Aztek?

After Honda introduced its 2010 Accord Crosstour hatchback wagon last week, blogs were abuzz -- and, if you're Honda, not in a good way.

"My eyes! My eyes!" screeched one wag on autoblog.com. "Staggeringly ugly. Aztek ugly," wrote another. The reference is to the now-deceased Pontiac Aztek, which many people think set the standard for modern automotive ugliness when it went on sale in July 2000.

Other descriptions included "a dinosaur's head" and "an old sneaker that you find under the couch covered in dust."

Critics saw an unusual roofline, a chunky back end and a bulbous nose that only a rhinoplasty surgeon could love. Their prognosis for the Crosstour, which is meant to fight the Toyota Venza for the minds, hearts and dollars of empty-nest boomers: Not a chance.

Honda fared little better on its official Facebook site for the vehicle.

"As a proud owner of an '06 Honda, this car disgusts me," said one writer. Said another: "Seriously, Honda, what happened?"

The Honda PR team scurried to their damage-control battle stations.

Honda spokesman Sage Marie said much of the chatter is probably from enthusiasts rather than the vehicle's intended target market. And you know how those people are.

"It's been our experience that the tone of Internet chatter is usually negative, regardless of the product. While we take it seriously, it also needs to be taken with a grain of salt," Marie said. "Our research suggests that the styling tests very well among crossover intenders -- our image buyer for this vehicle."

Hum, no!!! I have to say, though I may not be considered the target market, that thing is close to the ugliest vehicle on the market now. At the same time, for someone that is not considered the target market, I happen to like the Venza. I find it to be a very stylish, capable option (this from someone who has owed many Hondas in the past and never a Toyota). I'm not sure what Honda's styling department is thinking lately. The newest Accord is the ugliest Accord since its debut in the eighties, with its bug eyes and chopped rear end!!!! Well, I guess that's why Toyota is number one and rising in the US and Honda can't even surpass a bankrupt GM.

I think it looks pretty cool except for the front grill, which looks really out of place. It looks like it belongs on a truck.

Perhaps i'm insane but if you look past the front end it looks sort of like the Porsche Panamera.

I actually think it looks somewhat better than the current gen Accord sedan. In hope they improved the interior too.

This thing is an exercise in (i) bad taste, (ii) lack of design creativity, and (iii) a me-too! group think so prevalent in the auto industry. It is remarkable that the Korean automakers, recently so successful in their attempts to reverse engineer luxury cars, had influences one of the best auto manufactures in the world. The first gripe should be with the grill, among many MANY others. It simply is not attractive. To me it is offensive, but I am sure in Honda's attempts to follow in the footsteps of Toyota and stamp off as many "vanilla" products as possible, this design was conceived to not offend as many people as possible. Next, the car is based upon a FWD platform. This is not a Subaru or Mitsubishi platform that has ben refined continuously and achieved rallying success. In fact, Honda, has not produced an exciting model since the S2000, which was originally first conceived as a show car in 1995.

Sorry, Honda, once again you simply fall flat in your tag-along design language. Using an Insight grill and an overstuffed rear end is not a recipe for success, especially for a company that has based its reputation on increasingly less adventurous designs. I would support any attempt to make a splash in the auto market, but this is so ill-conceived it is painful to my eyes. At least the American car companies will get some breathing room when this thing is released.

As for the previous comment about the Panorama, it is one of the worst designs in the last decade. With Aston Martin, Masarati, and Kharma all designing beautiful GT cars, pedigree will eventually fall flat and even the Porsche faithful will admit its shortcomings...

I just bought a CUV, and would not have considered the Crosstour on appearance alone. Looks slightly better in red, but then again so does my wife.

Hooey! That thing is hideous! Seriously, Honda... just bring the stinking Accord Tourer over here to the States... a billion times sexier. Americans need to start embracing wagons so we can get some of the Euro-spec wagons over here in the States. I'm ready for other options besides the now-ugly-ified Subaru Outback wagon and there isn't much out there.

I just read that the rest of the world get the Accord Wagon. I had an old one for many years that was a great car. Forget this over sized Pinto/Gremlin looking thing and just bring the wagon to the states.
