Subaru BRZ/Scion FR-S earn top safety award
The twin sports coupes from Toyota and Subaru earn the Top Safety Pick award from the IIHS, making each a solid consumer choice in both safety and performance.

In many cases, it falls far behind handling, acceleration, and overall driving enjoyment. Thankfully, for those interested in either the Subaru BRZ or the Scion FR-S, safety is not something to sacrifice. The twin Japanese rear-drive sports coupes earned the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's 2012 Top Safety Pick award, the highest rating available.
Each passed all three categories -- front, side, and roof strength tests -- easily, and are the only sports coupes in the $30,000 price range to do so. Given their tail-happy character, that is good news, indeed. Combined with the performance, handling, and fun-to-drive nature of each car, the reasons not to own one are slim.
Along with the xB, TC, and xD, the award is another Scion can add to its list of top-rated vehicles. Subaru has yet to build a car that doesn't come with the coveted award.
