Review: 2009 Hyundai Sonata Limited

Hyundai got high marks from many auto reviewers for the last generation of its Sonata sedan, but it fell short on the car tech front. But now the 2009 Hyundai Sonata is here, and it looks good for catching up with and surpassing its nearest competitors. We weren't surprised to find a navigation system in a Toyota Corolla we reviewed recently, but when we saw the LCD in the Sonata's dashboard, we only kept on our feet because we had a little advance warning. It was the iPod integration and the voice command system that really floored us. We had the top-of-the line Limited V6 model, which comes with an engine offering more than adequate power for the little sedan. We were only troubled by the transmission's gear hunting, the soft ride, and the overly powered steering.

I purchased a 2009 Sonata on May 10 - fully loaded. The car had about 200 miles on it but no one at the dealer could tell me the satellite system did not work. After four trips and calls to Hyundai Motor of America I was essentially told all I could do is wait. Oh by the way, they cracked the interior panel getting at the wires. It is now about July 1. It seems the satellite system is so intertwined with all the other electronics it takes a special part. A part that is nowhere to be found in the US. So before you go out and grab this car remember me sitting here waiting for a part for electronics, and an interior panel, for my brand new 2009 Hyundai Sonata.

I am having the same problems with my XM radio service. The dealer claims that the manufacturer recommends replacing the radio, but after 4 attempts, I still have the same problem! I have been paying for XM service that I'm not getting, geting the run around from the dealer as well as Hyundai. I keep getting a No Signal message after the XM radio runs for a few minutes. I was originally told that I was getting the No Signal message because I was driving in an area that had "no signal". My response was that I thought that would only happen when I couldn't get satellite reception while driving on Mars!
I'm getting frustrated. Curious to know if you have had any luck with getting that special part?

wow! I just bought a '09 gls which doesnt come with navigation, BUT the good thing for you is that you still have 9 yrs 9 months and 99,800 miles till they fix the problems with your ride free of charge! Wish me luck!!

Only the dive train has that warranty not the electronics. And regardless of that warranty it's still very inconvenient to try and get Hyundai to honor the warranty and for that matter fix the problem once they admit there is one.

I could not beleive how bad my new 2009 Sonata Limited handles the road. The car rides hard and hitting bumps can be a jarring experience. New shocks were installed after just 600 miles to no avail. There was no improvement in the ride as the car still makes noises just going over cracks ithe road.

The suspension was designed for good cornering not ride comfort. If you want a softer ride you will have to run your tires a few PSI lower than what they are currently, note that this will cause faster wear on them.

Traded in my 06 Sonata, which was a great car (even with 58k miles on it), for the 09 Sonata SE in April 09. The great thing about the 09 was that I didn't have to relearn a majority of the controls. The 09 is quicker, a little more comfortable and has a few more bells and whistles. The handsfree Blue Connect took a little bit of effort to set up with my cell phone but has performed flawlessly. XM Radio is great except in the mountainous areas when it is blocked from the signal. My only complaint is the Oil Pressure idiot light did not light up when my failure to fully seat the oil filter cover at oil change resulted in the oil blowing out the top. Not knowing what has happened and with smoke billowing out from under the car, the light did not come on. I suspected the AC had blown and only after arriving at home and looking under the hood, did I discover the lack of oil in the crankcase. Thankfully, I had switched to synthetic oil on the first change and it protected the engine on the trip home, approximately 60 miles. It took a little while for the syn oil to burn off and for the unforgettable smell to disappear, but all in all, no effect on performance or mileage and again, thankfully, no engine damage. Hyundai just keeps getting better and better. PS: I really wanted the 2010 Genesis Coupe, but my wife would have pitched a heck of a fit.

I bought a 2008 sonata with 35,000 miles on it. I test drove it in an area with only smooth roads and it seemed to ride great. After buying it I drove it around where I live in missouri for about two months, also an area with mostly smooth roads, and didnīt have any problem. I had rented a couple of korean cars in mexico and they seemed to have good suspensions, so I assumed this one would too. Big mistake. On a road tirip to mexico, I first ran into some rough pavement in arkansas and couldnīt bellieve how bad it rode - noisy and hard. Now Iīm in mexico and have driven quite a bit - the slightest imperfection in the road causes it to jar, a bad bump is like a punch to the gut. After hours of driving on less than perfect roads, my arms are tired from hanging on the the steering wheel. the worst suspension of any car I have ever driven - totally unacceptable. Iīll be selling it or trading it in as soon as I get back to missouri. this is a well known problem by hyundai - check out edmunds.com town talk blog - lots of people have this problem and there doesnīt seem to be any fix for it..
