I am a hobbyist shooter looking for a lens that takes acceptable pictures for night sports, mainly football. I am using the basic canon 70-300mm F4-5.6 zoom lens on a rebel xti. Unfortunately, even at the highest ISO setting, I cannot get acceptable pictures. I am convinced I need a new lens, but I am not sure what to look for. I am a student and do not have loads of dispensable income for a new lens so I would like to keep it under $400. Any suggestions for a lens or shooting techniques to make my pictures acceptable? Thanks? Jordan in Kentucky

- I'd recommend that Jordan not buy another sub-$400 lens, but use the opportunity to improve technique while saving for that really fast sports lens (and high ISO body). Take a lot of shots in the continuous shooting mode, get creative with different shooting angles (low to the ground, top of the press box, end zone, inside the hot dog stand, below the goal posts, locker room pep talks, outside the stadium, etc.), master exposure and white balance, practice handheld steadiness, practice panning, use a monopod, use a tripod, and pay attention to light (a good off-camera flash might be a better investment than a lens right now). To find out why Lori giggled when you asked for a sub-$400 sports lens, rent the Canon 300mm or 400mm f/2.8L IS for the week of the big game (they rent for <$300/week), and start saving those pennies!
