Today's questions
Shooting sports

I am a hobbyist shooter looking for a lens that takes acceptable pictures for night sports, mainly football. I am using the basic canon 70-300mm F4-5.6 zoom lens on a rebel xti. Unfortunately, even at the highest ISO setting, I cannot get acceptable pictures. I am convinced I need a new lens, but I am not sure what to look for. I am a student and do not have loads of dispensable income for a new lens so I would like to keep it under $400. Any suggestions for a lens or shooting techniques to make my pictures acceptable? Thanks? Jordan in Kentucky

Senior Editor Lori Grunin has been covering digital imaging for two decades, but her memory's kind of sketchy on the details. You can hear about it every week on Indecent Exposure, the podcast she co-hosts with Matt Fitzgerald.

One possible solution for Jordan in Kentucky who needs a fast lens for less than $400 is to get a fixed focal length lens. If he slaps a 180mm lens on his Canon Rebel with the 1.6x cropping factor he will get an equivalent of nearly 300mm at f2.8. He will probably need to crop the resulting images...

I do not recommend! The co-host Lori Grunin may be a adequate photographer but she lacks the basic skills required to run an audio podcast. Beside simply being filled with boring chit-chat and uncalled for 'giggling'; Lori's apparent speaking insecurities cause her to repeatedly jokingly insult guests and emailers. CNET offers wonderful shows; this isn't one of them. If you like photography I recommend This Week in Photography.

I'd recommend that Jordan not buy another sub-$400 lens, but use the opportunity to improve technique while saving for that really fast sports lens (and high ISO body). Take a lot of shots in the continuous shooting mode, get creative with different shooting angles (low to the ground, top of the press box, end zone, inside the hot dog stand, below the goal posts, locker room pep talks, outside the stadium, etc.), master exposure and white balance, practice handheld steadiness, practice panning, use a monopod, use a tripod, and pay attention to light (a good off-camera flash might be a better investment than a lens right now). To find out why Lori giggled when you asked for a sub-$400 sports lens, rent the Canon 300mm or 400mm f/2.8L IS for the week of the big game (they rent for <$300/week), and start saving those pennies!
