Today's question
Indoor exposures

Hi, I recently bought a Canon 40d with a 50mm 1.4 and 70-200mm F4L to start what has been a wonderful journey into the world so far. My major problem has been exposure with incandescent light. Any tips on how to make my pictures come out right? Also, any recommendations for books for teaching photography? Enjoy the show and the off beat humor every week! Cody

Hi, Thanks for picking my image as the winner in the competition in the previous episode. I am really honored.

Here is an image shot with flash. http://flickr.com/photos/leeadc/2803346875/

I like to take a lot of wildlife and especially butterfly photos. One of the challenges is getting the light just right. Even in the summer here in the UK the lighting can be highly variable, changing with cloud cover etc. So I have been experimenting with using fill flash to avoid shadows. I just us the built in flash (I don't have a seperate flash unit yet, but would love one!) with a flash diffuser mount in front.

Thanks, Lee.

I wouldn't call this a "photograph", but I do find it kinda funny and I did use the flash:

This picture was taken using a combination of lighting techniques: a flash to set the ambient light and a flashlight to set the highlights.

Liking or not liking an EVF can depend on what kind of a shooter you are. Personally I seldom try to shoot things that are in active motion with my Sony DSC R1. But, I love its EVF for composing shots of things are are standing still. The ability to see the composition from odd angles is REALLY liberating.

just one of those situations where flash was needed, because of the limitations of the camera which worked out great.

Seems to me EVF is a non-issue, because I feel like the target audience of G1 is shooters who want the nice picture quality that better lens and large DSLR-size sensors can provide but still want to be able to take pics like a point-and-shoot (via the lcd).

This portrait was taken in Battery park in New York city last month. 1st-curtain was used, and the flash output was reduced to give the subject a more natural look.

I took this with a self timer. I used a long exposure to capture the falls with a burst of flash at the very beginning. http://stankus.smugmug.com/gallery/4882372_VtLm2#295782820_cfK6W

i have a very newbie question. can i use a compact wideangle converter on an slr lens?

i'm a student and i don't have a big budget. so i wish to know if i could use a 70usd 0.7x converter on a 50mmf1.4. i'm not ready to shell out 300usd for a sigma30mmf1.4. my photos are limited to flickr, facebook and hardly on print.

would like to share a photo my love took. it's pretty sci fi like.

Here is a photo I took just two weeks ago that required flash to fill in the shadows

This is probably too late also (it's thursday night) but I'm throwing this up too.... Maybe I'll start listening to the podcast in a more timely fashion!

Lit with a single strobe, camera right, with a large reflector camera left.

This is late but here is my example of flash photography, not my flash but I had a 4 second exposure and captured somebody's flash from the other side.
